Applying leadership skills sets the supervisor apart as someone who is in charge, capable, and driven. Being a supervisor involves the ability to educate and empower supervisees. Using leadership skills is both task and relationship-oriented. A successful supervisor is competent and committed in his/her clinical knowledge and is comfortable with the leadership style. Successful supervisors value integrity, honesty, empathy, trust, ethics, and diversity and have the ability to adapt and change based on goals, objectives, situational factors, and the needs of supervisees.

Social workers aspire to ease the suffering of their clients, which can lead to an emotionally and physically deterioration, is fundamental to their work. Self-care is a way or social service professionals to balance work and maintain endurance and wellbeing in their relationships and their careers. Self-care practice can be a burnout remedy which seems to be an integration of mental emotional and physical exhaustion. To balance the activities longevity and happiness in both their relationships and their careers, social service professionals needs to self-care regularly by taking break, saying no, have a support system, set goals, connect with emotions and practicing mindfulness. Self-care is a survival skill in supervision. Priscilla Dass-Brailsford explains in her book, that countertransference, vicarious trauma (VT), secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue and satisfaction, and burnout are all different ways that counselors can be affected (Dass-Brailsford, 2007). This is where it is important for social workers to have a plan of self-care and stress management resources to use.

Supervisors should create a safe place for supervisee to examine and articulate her/his thoughts, ideas, and behavior, while also remaining open to alternative thoughts, ideas, and interpretations. Often the subjects that prompt this type of thinking are: how one approached a case or project, and the thinking behind a specific course of action. It is also critical to pay attention to the supervisee’s internal world. How does his/her sense of self affect his/her perspectives, ideas and decisions. This element of supervision is essential to the supervisee developing critical thinking skills and the ability to self-reflect, self-monitor and self-correct in training. Supervision is an important component of social work practice. Best practice includes generalist practice in which a supervisor possesses advance competencies in multilevel, multimethod approaches and is equipped to work independently in difficult environments or collectively and having the ability to adapt to fast pasted and the changing environments.
