Ethnicity is defined as being belonging to a group with a mutual national or cultural tradition. Some examples of ethnicity are Latino, Spanish, and Hispanic Origin. The idea of ethnicity sometimes gets confused for nationality and race, however there is a difference. Nationality focuses on the relationship one has between the country affiliated with. Race refers to groups one can be classified into based on physical attributes. Before 1997, ethnicity and race wasn’t specified when asked; it changed from Asian or Pacific Islander into two categories and Hispanic was changed to Hispanic or Latino.
Multiculturalism is defined as a society of many cultural or ethnic groups. For example, students from a variety of countries that speak different languages shows multiculturalism because there are different backgrounds in a setting. Multiculturalism on a social level means the social benefits from diversity and the different cultures.
Bilingual Education refers to getting taught academic content in native and secondary language. An example of bilingual education is dual language because students are learning about writing and reading in two languages like English, Spanish, French etc. Bilingual Education has its pros and cons like being diverse and children learn a second language easier but specific content can be difficult and not a lot of people are available to teach.
Protestant Work Ethic can be defined as ones’ duty to gain success from hard work, seeing a sign of success usually is interpreted as one being saved. The idea of Protestant Work Ethic was developed when Reformation took place and Martin Luther tried to reform the Catholic Church. Protestant Work Ethic often gets confused for Catholic Work Ethic but they are different because Catholic Work Ethic the principles of their faiths differ although they workshop the same God.
Meritocracy is defined as those who are talented are picked to move ahead because of their achievement. They can also be picked based on an intellectual criteria. An example could be The Department or Justice hiring the next District Judge based on the person having the best credentials, qualifications, and experience. Meritocracy and democracy different although people think it’s the same because a democracy involves the citizens but not because anyone is privileged more than another.
American Exceptionalism is defined in three different ways. The first being the United States history is different from other nations. The second is the United States has a mission to transition the word. The third idea being the United States is superior because of its’ history and mission.
Colonial Settles (US) is distant colonialism that functions through the replacements of indigenous populations with an invasive settler society that develops identity. A popular example is in Africa, when the Dutch controlled South America. The British and French also controlled parts of Asia. The point of Colonial Settlers was to get rid of the natives. Colonial Settling was to destroy so they can replace it.
