Throughout the next five days, I will be gathering US weather maps in order to compare and contrast the weather patterns in Baton Rouge, LA and New York City, NY. The purpose of these maps is to notice the different climates and the weather patterns of the two cites through Current US Surface Weather Maps, US Current Temperatures maps, and Infrared Satellite maps.

The ultimate goal of collecting this data is to be able to predict the weather pattern based on the previous patterns of the last 5 days, and how this weather is affecting both Baton Rouge and New York City. From collecting this data, it will be possible to predict the temperatures, wind speed and direction, cloud coverage and precipitation, and pressure cells. The current weather in Baton Rouge, LA is typically in the high 70s to low 90s with 70-80% humidity, high precipitation rates, and wind speeds between 7-10 mph heading south-west.

The weather in New York City has a higher range of temperatures due to its location that is farther north rather than cities in the south, but New York City’s temperatures start out at 53 degrees and only reaches a high of 56 degrees, with humidity starting at 50% and going up to 74% and wind speeds from 7-10 mph going northeast. In Baton Rouge in the summers, the temperatures start out in the low 70’s and as the day goes on it rises to 90°, and this is caused by all the high pressure that sits over the southeastern portion of the United States.

But in the winters, the temperatures don’t experience as climate difference as cities farther north due to less cloud coverage and more heat being pushed from the Gulf of Mexico. The population of Baton Rouge is 227,715 that was taken in 2016, and has grown rapidly in the last 17 years, and will continue to grow. Increasing temperatures will cause the water in the Gulf of Mexico to expand, and low-lying areas in cities will also be extremely affected by the rising sea.

New York City has a humid subtropical climate, with cold winters and hot moist summers, and the location of New York City is on the coast and keeps the city not as cold as farther inland cities at that same latitude. In the summers, the average highs hit 84 °F and are extremely hot and humid, whereas in the winters the temperatures are generally above freezing but the average lows can go to 27 °F.

The population of New York City is 8.538 million which was recorded in 2016, has grown rapidly over the last 20 years, and because they have such a high population, they will have higher climatic variability and will affect the population as a whole. There is low pressure systems in the the north, east, south and west parts of the country with rain in the mid east whereas there is a high pressure in the middle and northern parts of the country.

There is a cold front situated across the northern part of the country which is also affecting some of the same parts by rain. As air cools it rises which may cause there to be water vapor in the air to then condense into liquid water droplets which can form clouds and precipitation. On the First day for Baton Rouge the weather was 75°, cloudy, with winds of 9 mph out of SSE, with an 85% humidity and high of 80° and low of 70°.

In New York City, the temperature is 53°, cloudy with winds of 7 mph out of NNE, with a humidity of 72% and a high of 79° and low of 69°. Some of the differences of these two cities are the temperatures which is about 22° and then the winds where one is coming out of the South South East for Baton Rouge at 9 mph and for New York City it comes out of North North East which is at 7 mph.

On Day 2 for Baton Rouge, the temperature was 78°, was partly cloudy, with wind speeds of 7 mph in the direction of North North East, a humidity percentage of 72% and the high was 79° and a low of 69°. In New York City on this day it was 58°, cloudy, with a wind speed of 1 mph in the direction of NNW, the humidity percentage is 95% and a high of 63° and a low of 51°. There is a high pressure system coming through the south and eastern coast, as well as the middle and northern border of the country. Whereas there are low pressure systems in the south west portion of the country.

The rain that was also situated with the cold front has moved father north-east and the storm system has moved to the northern states, which has also hit the southern states and has moved south-east. On day 3, there are high pressure systems all throughout the east coast, west coast and the middle, while there are some low pressure systems in southwest and the Gulf of the Mexico or the southern coast which also is having rain along with the low pressure system.

On day 3 in Baton Rouge, LA, high was 66° with a low of 54° with a wind speed of 3 mph Northeast while the weather conditions were foggy, and a humidity percentage of 100%, where as in New York City, NY, the high was 62° with a low of 51° with no wind speed with weather conditions of fair and a 47% percentage humidity.

On day 4, in Baton Rouge, LA, the high was 54° with a low of 50° with a wind speed of 9 mph in the North while the weather conditions were fair and a humidity percentage of 80%, while in New York City, NY with a high of 56° and a low of 45° with no wind speeds, fair weather conditions and a 56% humidity. There are high pressure systems in northwest region as well as low pressure system along the southern border which coincides with the rain moving in on the southern states, and the high pressure systems match up with the cold air in different regions of the country.

The rain is slowly moving north and the temperatures are rising because of the low pressure system in the southern states. The rain storms are moving away from the southern states and into the Atlantic Ocean.

On Day 5 in Baton Rouge, LA, the high was 54° with a low of 34° with no wind speed while the weather conditions were foggy and a humidity percentage of 100%, whereas in New York City, NY, there is a high of 52° with a low of 40° with no wind speeds, and light rain weather conditions and 93% humidity. There are many high pressure systems that are moving north and the rain storms are coinciding with low and high pressure systems meeting. Rain clouds are moving back into the gulf and temperatures are continuing to decrease based off of the high pressure system.

Conclusion and Prediction

I believe that high pressure systems will move in from the north east which will affect the temperature and rainfall, and low pressure systems will begin moving inland from the west coast. The temperatures will drop in places that there is a high pressure system and in the low pressure system, they will rise as air rises when it cools which may cause there to be water vapor in the air to then condense into liquid water droplets which can form clouds and precipitation, and rain will begin to move into the Atlantic Ocean based on past movements from the maps.

When there are areas of high and low pressure system, they are usually caused by ascending and descending air. The temperature of the air is created by the mixture of air, water and land working together and these 3 things affect heat and cool areas at different speeds and change throughout the day, the time of year and even the seasons.
