Everyone have their own identity. It can be as an individual, as a community or as a country. Individual differs from identity because of their race, culture, customs and traditions they have live and grown with, so as Filipinos and Westerners.

Who am I? This is a question that most of the people don’t know the answer especially Filipinos because the culture of the Philippines is a combination of different cultures. Filipino identity was created primarily as a result of colonization of the Spaniards, Americans, and the Japanese. But before that, they are inhabited by multiple ethnicities like Negritos, Indonesians and Malays. Even though they are colonized and inhabited by different people and race they still share the same culture and tradition. These are some of Filipino identity: Filipinos are known as a respectful people because they use the word “po” and “opo” to the elderly. They used to eat using their bare hands because in the perceptions of the Filipinos using bare hands makes you more eager to eat than to use spoon and fork. Filipinos also are family-oriented. They always think for the good of their family. Aside from that, Filipinos are much known because of their hospitality towards their visitors it’s one of the signature of Filipinos and it’s one of the identity as Filipinos. The culture and tradition of Filipinos is a fusion of traditional Filipino, Spanish Catholic, Americans and Japanese.

According to Lowell Sun, Identity has become very prominent in American culture in past years. What you dress; where you come from; how much you earn and how you talk, are the superficial indices that many use to peg you into one group or another.

In America, the identity as a person is seeing through the physical aspect not in the person’s character and as whole being. They’ve lost the deeper identity of each individual because they tend to look and judge the physical appearance rather than its being. Westerners are known as liberated people. They are willing to break the rules and change them with the development. The people in the West live for themselves only when the legality stage takes on.

Based on my research, American are very unique in terms of character. These are some of the American identity and character: They have their own individuality. They see individuals as separate with their external appearance with its identity. They also have that cooperation and willingness to solve the problems. They have that kind of mindset in terms of managing conflict in a compromising way. Westerners are much known also as people that have their own freedom to live because they have belief that there are no artificial bounds.
