The way I observe it, the subjects in the humanities are vital to understand the human experience. In a world where we’re constantly distancing ourselves from our human-ness and are slowly inching towards being androids, I feel that the Humanities is a fresh breath of life. Personally I’ve always been interested in the humanities. As a curious student, I’ve come across many questions to which I’m constantly looking for answers. How we humans evolved from apes to the complex social animals we are now is particularly interesting to me. In my opinion, the events and ideas that shaped our present society is of extreme importance . The study of various cultures, histories and languages has always appealed to me and I believe that studying them formally would give me a better understanding of the world we live in. This is why I would like to study the Humanities formally.
In the modern society that we live in, I believe that it is important for one to have a firm understanding of various cultures and the complex society that events and people around us have produced. I have always been interested in the dynamics of human society and factors of social development. The essential part they play in the key to understanding society is what inspires to me study Sociology formally.I believe that this would be the right major subject for me, given my areas of interest which include, but are not limited to ethnicity, social movements, conflicts, psychology, gender and sexuality. As an undergraduate student I wish to explore as much as I can about these topics and the other subjects which your college offers in the Humanities course; and find a way to integrate the knowledge that I’ve obtained to do something worthwhile in my academic journey. I hope to undertake valuable research as an undergraduate student in the department and hopefully work towards my Masters’ degree in the fields of sociology or psychology.
My influences include the work of authors such as William Dalrymple, Arundhati Roy, Jean Sasson, Robert Lacey and Bama. Their perspectives on social affairs and narrative insights have helped me understand diverse viewpoints and better appreciate research narration. Robert Lacey’s in depth study of Saudi Arabia and his consequent book “Inside the Kingdom” was my first introduction to the society of a country outside India. Arundhati Roy’s way with words never fail to amaze me. Bama’s unapologetic honesty, her struggle against caste oppression and her strength amaze me. All the authors I’ve mentioned and others have contributed to my ideas and thoughts. They’ve shaped my worldview in a million ways and continue to inspire me. This exposure to critical literature further adds thirst within me to explore even more diverse writings, ideas and viewpoints, in such a way that my worldview is further broadened and mature enough to understand social phenomenon in a structured and unbiased manner.
My reason for choosing Manipal Centre for Humanities is the wonderfully structured course you provide. I believe that the faculty and students at MCH would play a pivotal and life changing role in my academic journey. In the classes offered at the college, I hope to pick up skills such as analytical reasoning and the latest research techniques ,especially in the context of studies relating to global south and gender issue in developing and underdeveloped economies, given their extreme importance in the field of sociology for the modern times. I believe that I am a worthy candidate for a place at MCH since I am a committed and reliable student who is passionate about her work. I hope that I can contribute to society with the skills and knowledge I’ve garnered over the years. I aim to get into civil society initiatives and work at the grassroots level, interacting with people and stakeholders, such that I can consume as much learning as possible in a most direct and qualitative fashion. I believe that MCH will provide the vast knowledge and understanding of the subjects I crave and provide opportunities to pursue a fruitful career. I am most certainly sure that in case I am offered to pursue my course in the department, it will be a mutually fruitful relationship, to both myself, as well as the college both in terms of learning and research output respectively.
