I, Angela Norris, RN believe that nursing is a selfless act of giving of yourself to others for the greater good of those in a time of need. A servant’s heart is a gift to be shared. Core values and beliefs of my nursing practice shall include valuing the sanctity of life, excellence in delivery of care, and professionalism.

Nursing as my chosen profession, in my opinion, is that we are the hands and feet of a higher power with a dedication to those who are weak and in despair.

Doing unto others as you would have them do unto you with a caring spirit represents my belief as the core of nursing. The excellent holistic care I deliver will be of respect for each unique individual forming a relationship of moral and ethical trust despite any differences to promote a healthy body, mind, and spirit.

The focus of nursing is advocating for patients to provide innovative culturally competent patient and family centered care which protects and supports that well-being going forward. Promotion of independence through education with empathy and understanding for positive outcomes.

My vision as a nurse is to provide quality compassionate care with continued lifelong learning of evidenced based practice to achieve best outcomes for patients, the practice of nursing, and promotion of nursing as a true profession.

To live out this personal philosophy of nursing, each encounter is an opportunity to reevaluate my personal belief system having an open mind for the autonomy patients possess for making their health care decision. The power of healing is from within the patient and to treat all patients with dignity and respect.

My patients are looking for help in a time of need and their families need assurance that their loved one is in a safe place with trusted caregivers. Collaboration with fellow health care professionals and effective communication of the plan of care will foster trusting relationships to ensure continuity of care.

Self-care for my body, soul and mind creating a work life balance will be my goal to provide genuine, professional, and safe care during each patient encounter.

This philosophy may change over time, but my goal is to end my shift with my patient better than they arrived. In conclusion, my favorite quote by Maya Angelou to sum up my philosophy is, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
