Dear Dr. Chávez,
Thank you for the engaging conversation and informational interview we had on January 25, 2019. Listening to your story, I could not help but note the similarity/similarities is/in some of our past experiences. Your inputs have convinced me that I could make a positive contribution to/at the Trinity University. I am writing to formally apply for the advertised position of Program Associate at the Center for International Engagement (CIE) (Rephrase). The attached resume lists my educational background and employment, but this letter provides more detail on important aspects of my life experience and motivation that may be more relevant to your evaluation of my suitability for the job.
I grew up in a farming family in rural India with little education in English and limited connections to the outside world. Working as a farmer, I learned to live with very little and be content and grateful for what we had. Farming in India is difficult with periods of drought and these difficulties have taught me to adapt to setbacks with patience and have the commitment to start over. This humble beginning provided me with a good perspective on life and molded me to understand my social responsibility. I believe I should not only be able to help myself but also have the capability to help others (rephrase) who do not have resources or the opportunity/opportunities to help themselves.
With my parents’ encouragement, I enrolled at a nearby University in India for a degree in Business. This was my first experience in leaving my rural area, and because of my leadership skills, I was elected to be the General Secretary of the Student Association at the university in my final year. During my college years, I volunteered for anti-human trafficking organizations and went/that go into “red light” areas to rescue children of sex workers from the threats of human trafficking by defending their rights and dignity, providing a safe environment, supporting their education and health and leading major advocacy efforts. I continue to support these organizations even now with my contributions every year.
After coming to the US, during my MBA program I worked as a Supplemental Instructor (SI) at the Student Success Center at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU). This opportunity allowed me to work with a diverse student body including students with multiple and varying ethnic, racial and national backgrounds, working adults, persons with disabilities, and active duty/veteran military personnel. My work has molded my ability to be a better listener and increased my patience and empathy while working with others in the workforce. Since graduating from OLLU in December 2017 I worked as a Staff Accountant and Business Analyst and led various projects to automate and streamline workflow processes. In the three years, I have spent in the US, I have become proficient in speaking and writing English, as this letter will, hopefully, demonstrate.
I believe I have the right experience for becoming a Program Associate at Trinity University. As someone who has also (extra) studied and lived “abroad” in a new culture, I have a particular understanding of the difficulty students can face when learning in a new environment. As can be seen from my background, not only did I successfully coordinated the work of OLLU faculty, staff, students, and alumni for the SI programs but have the required skills in project and budget management.
In my previous jobs, I gained experience in supervising a small staff and with marketing and communications particularly in the use of new media and social networking. All my jobs have required the use of Microsoft Office programs and my 4.0 GPA at OLLU will confirm my ability to learn quickly. I recognize that I do not have the fluency in Mandarin that could be useful but have the potential and other useful skills to expand Trinity’s global outreach particularly in South Asia where the culture and customs are similar to the one I grew up in.
I am familiar with an academic atmosphere and I love the enthusiasm that exists in such an environment. My commitment is to break the vicious cycle of forced and intergenerational prostitution by creating/developing a self-sustaining system to provide access to/that provides alternative livelihoods and empowerment tools. I strongly believe quality international education is / can create that common ground where for equal opportunities and to solve global issues. Not only do my belief and commitment align with Trinity’s mission and values but Trinity sounds like a place that employs passionate and hardworking people, which is just the kind of organization I would like to join. I am confident I would be a valuable asset to your team in this role. I look forward to hearing a positive response from you.
Sincerely,
Sandeep Yadav
