We all know mathematics is very essential in education, it serves as the core towards many aspects. It is such a great contributor towards the progression of a country that’s why we, students are taught to learn mathematics in accordance to the global standards of education. But the problem is, the performance of the students here in the Philippines is poor and substandard. The Philippine national statistics shows that the deficiency of mathematics educational system is prevalent nationwide, therefore we can somehow state that the mathematics educational system of the country greatly affects the students’ performance, I somehow agree because from my experience from my elementary to college days most of my classmates said that they hated Mathematics and they find it difficult to learn, but there are some, that claimed that Mathematics is a fun subject if you are truly passionate in it.

So from the study conducted by Bonghanoy et al. (2019) it aims to provide a possible solution for the prevailing problem by changing or enhancing the professional development training for all Mathematics teacher in the Philippines in order for us students to gain interest, understand the significance of learning mathematics which in turn may improve the students’ performance, For me learning mathematics is a difficult task also, especially when the topics are complicated and weren’t explained thoroughly, so I tend to lose interest and divert my attention.

The research study implemented a Qualitative research design because it aims to know what certain factor affects the students interest from learning mathematics effectively, so it focuses more from the experiences of the teachers and from the students also, so the research participants were mostly students, they’ve shared their opinions about why mathematics is such a difficult subject to learn. Obviously, they’ve chosen many students and teachers as their respondents for them to know the best teaching strategies to be implemented.

Based from the results of the study there are factors that affect the interest of students in learning Mathematics, one factor is the student having difficulty in understanding the significance of the subject. As for me also, I’m not into mathematics, but if I can thoroughly understand the concepts of the topic and how to solve that certain problem, it may somehow perk my interest to learn more.

They’ve implemented the transformative learning in certain schools, by connecting mathematics into real-life situations through activities and games, in that way students’ interest perks up and their willingness to learn more about the concepts and how to solve, would surely increase. For me, learning mathematics is surely interesting if it’s implemented through games and activities, since I love to play video games and there are some concepts of mathematics that I’ve learned from playing games, so transformative learning may be effective.

The paper concluded that the major issue on school rooms was the lack of interest among the learners towards mathematics in which their interest deficiency resulted into an overall poor performance towards the subject. I personally agree to the findings because you can’t be good at something if you’re not interested and passionate towards it.

Interest is one of the driving forces towards education and that is why it needs to be built. In the paper, they concluded that the solution towards the problem is through the application of transformative learning among the teachers, it is said in the paper that the after the training they felt more empowered, became creative and resourceful and thus the five aspects of transformative learning enhance the teachers’ ability and the students’ performance.

Since it is qualitative in nature, no numerical evidences were clearly shown. Furthermore, in the study we cannot deny that the teachers’ performance is a mere reflection on the academic performance of the students. Innovative teaching methods was given an emphasis to the quality of education that the students are receiving. In my own experience, somehow the way a teacher teaches towards a subject influenced my interest to it. In mathematics, I really believe a teacher should teach creatively since the subject itself which filled with numbers, so that it would perk our interest in learning mathematics.

Thus, this study is truly helpful in providing the most effective teaching strategy in enhancing the students’ performance in mathematics.
