The movie portrayed racism and police brutality in it’s true form and the impact it has had on African American lives. The movie started off with the bombing at the 16th Street Baptist Church which showed the four African American girls losing their lives moments before the start of the service at the church. This movie was created to definitely move the hearts of Americans and remind them to never forget Martin Luther King jr’s legacy and impact he had in shaping America’s nation.

The movie took place in Selma, Alabama with other locations like the White House. The movie included many main characters with Dr.King as the overall main character, but some of the other main characters included: Lyndon B. Johnson,Coretta Scott King(His Wife),George C.Wallace,Sheriff Jim Clark.etc.The movie was mainly about the history behind Dr.King’s march to Montgomery from Selma. It showed the impact that this march had on the nation and how many people lost their lives for the effort of allowing African American’s to vote without any hindrances. It showed how Martin Luther king jr. and thousands of others were willing to risk their life for what was right and what African Americans had been denied the chance to participate in.

There were multiple historical accuracies and references in the film that were portrayed head-on. As I said before the Bombing of the 16th Street Baptist church was a very historical moment that could never be forgotten and the police brutality faced on the bridge during the Selma to Montgomery march justly portrayed how far the white citizens of Selma, Alabama were willing to go to stop African Americans from voting. With this movie I did not personally feel any part of the film was exaggerated or made to look more than it was. I believe that every significant event in the film was justly portrayed as it happened in real life and that it was actually the opposite of exaggeration; they probably took out certain unsettling images to make it appropriate for the audience. Some scenes were very nerve racking and very unsettling to watch ,because all the violence portrayed in the film was very inhumane and disheartening.

The audience this movie was most appealing to would be people who fought for racial equality whether they were African American or white.I do believe people who are not happy with how the nation has turned out race wise or people who still believe in “White Superiority” would not particularly want to watch the film. This movie was made to move hearts and remind Americans to not let these efforts be put in vain. This movie personally was a five star rating mainly because of how well they portrayed the characters emotions and thoughts and how well they portrayed the events leading up to Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The MPAA rating is PG-13 which is why I said they probably cut out or didn’t use certain images to allow a wider range of people to view the film. I would definitely recommend this film to people wanting to watch something historical and impactful
