The issue in today’s world is climate change. The news started with showing the decrease in ice the polar bears live on this is because, in their habitat climate change is happening at a faster rate than the rest of the world, and what it is doing is melting the ice due to an abnormal increase in temperature but because it wasn’t affecting the British public as yet until… We went from having the hottest summer in 2018 from having the coldest most miserable one in 2019 now people want answers, but they have been there all along. I wish to communicate facts and reasoning to homeowners or students who do not have a scientific background, showing you why you should care and what you can do about it.

If people are aware of what is really going on, then they know what they can do to help this worldwide crisis; then we can all live a much brighter future. The definition of climate change is “a change in global or regional climate patterns”(oxford dictionary) a change in climate can happen anywhere from using too many fossil fuels these are used every day like coal, we use it on a barbecue or in any form of fire building, we use it because it gives us a long durable fire but the burning of it leaves a bigger carbon footprint on the earth and emits a lot of greenhouse gasses. Simple changes like from going from a coal to an electric barbecue you are helping to reduce this earths carbon footprint by that little bit more.

Now the argument comes in to “how would I make a difference?”, if you are cooking with an electric barbecue instead of a charcoal one and you have people over to see you could encourage them to make the change and before you know it you have set of a chain reaction of people making a difference and improving our world before it gets to the point of no return in damage.

A lot of todays energy comes from fossil fuels, but fossil fuels are a non-renewable energy source this means that it can’t be used again. We get fossil fuels from the decay of remains from dead plants or animals after a few years. The more we dig for them the less there will be making them rare and more expensive, this can increase poverty due to people struggling to pay the higher energy bills or petrol prices. “in 2013, humankind consumed approximately 505 quadrillion British thermal units of energy”(Incropera, F 2016) that is an incredible amount of energy used in a year, I we keep going at that rate there will be nothing but an increase in starvation and poverty.

The industrial revolution, what an era. This was mankind’s giant step forward in manufacturing, it allowed more people to have jobs and to work. Not only did it help with trading and boosting the economy, it also produced a lot of toxic gasses known as greenhouse gasses which some scientists believe contribute to the starting of climate change. It doesn’t just lie with the fumes that came out of the factories it also comes from the deforestation due to them needing land to build on and expand for people and businesses. Do you ever stop and think that half of the cities and buildings you see weren’t there before and instead it was things like habitats for wildlife animals that have since been destroyed? The only thing we can do about the past is to not make the same mistakes and to use and advertise the use of cleaner energy; making businesses and houses smarter to not only save the planet but to save money in the long run.

Solar power energy this is one of the many things we as humans can take responsibility and change to it. Solar energy is a renewable energy source, this means it won’t run out and you can often end up making money from it. In the UK the estimated costs for 28 M2 of tiles will cost you around 6-8000£ but you the roof space of times does range from 8-24M2 the more square meters you buy the more you save in the long run.

You would also need to get someone to install it which may also be costly but as an estimated saving to spending, if you buy the 24m2 tiles for 6-8000£ the profit you could make back after 20 years it 6000+£ (Greenmatch.co.uk, 2019) but you can also make more money by selling energy back to the power grid for any power that you don’t use for example, if the house starts to get cold and money is a bit tight instead of resorting to the heaters why not just put on a jumper, close some doors and windows to keep the draught out and save smartly. Although, the reverse can happen too if it is a really cold winter where you have no choice but to resort to the heater then you may owe the grid money.

Some people feel like seeing proof of climate change rather than just take scientists at their word. There are many scientific papers published for the public online, although be careful on Wikipedia because that website can be edited by anybody and isn’t always 100% accurate. I chose to write this In a blog style to make a more personal effect on my reader and make it more of an engaging informative conversation to make people intrigued. I have asked several my friends who have no scientific background other than GCSEs and asked them to rate the understanding and information of this resource, they all said they felt well informed and engaged.
