In this paper, I will be exploring ways that society has affected the concept of “family” and how history has impacted our role as an individual in the family. Family can have a lot of different meanings depending on who you ask. Even though families consist of a group, individuals within the family are just as important to keep the family afloat and maintained. Diversity and culture are major influences on families in a global community. Finding ones’ identity is deeply rooted in the family’s cultural heritage, background, and ancestors.

The effect of family and culture can significantly affect individual’s personality, beliefs, and morals. Since society has developed into an advanced and modern civilization, family structures around the world have experienced more benefits such as digital technology. Internet use and educational software offer a wide range of choices for families to engage and connect with each other. There is no specific definition for the best type of family structure, but as long as it’s filled with love and support it’ll most likely progress and thrive.

The meaning of society today has changed drastically over the past decade. As human beings, we are gathered in a particular community where we interact with each other to give usefulness to society of contributing our skills and talents. Our environment and the people around us can have an effect on the way we dress, talk, conduct ourselves, and live in society. Society to me means a large number of people in different communities. People represent society. We have people who benefit society by those who are productive such as working and helping or volunteering their surrounding community then we have those who want to tear down society such as criminal acts.

The government defines the classes of people living within society, the five common classes are lower, working, middle, upper-middle, and upper. The researchers analyzed how Americans identify themselves in each class; the results revealed 3% of Americans identified themselves as upper class, 15% as upper-middle class, 43% as middle class, 30% as working class, and 8% as lower class (Bird & Newport 2017). These new developments indicate how Americans way of living impact today’s modernized society.

In the past, there was only three common social ranks which were lower class, middle class, and upper class. As society progressed and became more innovated with technology, politics, and more the concept of family has challenged the idea of how it used to be. The last 50 years have recognized a wide variety of diverse relationships, such as gay couples, interracial couples, and open relationships. According to a research study, more than 60 % of white males aged 20 to 49 with jobs in the workforce, such as waiters and janitors, were married in the 1960’s. By 2010 that percentage was less than 30%.

Among African American men in the same circumstances decreased by 20% (Luscombe 2014). The idea of a “normal family” was for a man to be the breadwinner of the house and the woman to be the “housewife” and have children. Now that times have changed, the concept of family is beginning to evolve in our society. Everyone has their own lifestyle apart from the stereotype that families are supposed to have a mom, dad, kids or a pet. These days, there are kids who were adopted and now live with two moms or two dads or a family member other than their biological parents.

The definition of family today might be two people of any gender living in a shared space raising a child or children with one another. Just 46 percent of children live in the type of family household that was typical in the 1970’s. Some people are even waiting to find love and get married. “Today the median age for men for their first marriage is 29; for women it’s 27. On average, people are waiting almost six years longer to marry than those who did in 1967!” (Bonner 2018). Women are now waiting to conceive at a rate of 20 percent, unlike in the 1960’s, women ages 15 to 24 were estimated at about 40 percent of mothers having children.

The main link to our ingenious society is the ground-breaking world of technology. Technology has the ability to connect people from all over the world on one device such as social media, entertainment, dating apps, and so much more. Babies and toddlers are being exposed more to learning apps online to assist with their schooling and learning development. Technology is also being widely accepted in the classrooms for elementary, middle, high school, and college. I’d say almost half of a child’s day consists of using technology in the form of a tablet or computer.

As families identify their needs their focus depends on how to fulfill that need. The larger the pool of resources, the higher the probability that need will be met efficiently and effectively (Moore 2018). Often technology plays a big role in our schooling, careers, and communication; now it’s found in how we interact with our own immediate family. Not all technology is bad, but if we’re not careful in how much we use it on a daily basis it can negatively impact the people around us.
