What is a political ideology? According to “American Government”, it is a more or less consistent set of beliefs about what policies government ought to pursue. Whether one follows politics or not, at some point in their life, they will attain a political ideology. There are many factors that tie into the political views one has. A few major factors include parents, upbringing, and environment. I can vouch for these factors because growing up I had no idea what a Democrat or Republican was but I sure did know that my parents classified themselves as Democrats so I did too.

Now that I am much older and mature, I am able to perceive the beliefs and outlook that both parties have. It didn’t take long into my adolescent years to realize I am a far left liberal. I am a far left liberal because I am an advocate for social equality and egalitarianism. Living in a world filled with hate and resentment, I believe that we as humans should come together and realize that we are all made equal and therefore deserve to be treated equally. In regards to policies, I am most concerned with social progressivism. I believe that in order to better our country, we must take actions to get rid of the existing social inequality that currently exists.

Though it is said that we are all equal, certain minority groups such as African Americans and homosexuals are still treated unjustly. I fully endorse same sex marriage because we live in a country that prides itself on freedom, including the right to pick a spouse. Since I have been born and raised in the United States, specifically Southern California, it is evident that I would hold this position because California is considered a liberal state, dominated with Democrats that support the same ideal as I. As a member of the younger generation, my age also plays a major role in my political ideology because I am not accustomed to the “old-school” way of thought.

My parents immigrated from Mexico to the US in their younger years in hopes of a better life. It just so happens they came here, to California, a Democratic dominated state.. I know for a fact had my parents would’ve gone to another state such as Wyoming, their political views would have been much more different. Presuming my parents would have grown up in Wyoming, it is safe to say they would have been influenced by their environment since Wyoming is considered a Republican state. This is why I believe the surroundings of where one resides play a major role in the outcome of one’s political stand. I think one of the main reasons why my parents took the Democratic wing has to do with the Democratic view on immigration.

Democrats think the United States is country that is based off immigrants, and they should be valued and supported. My parents being immigrants at the time, weren’t too concerned with politics but did support a pro-immigration core. Due to this political view the Democratic party has on immigration is why they have the majority of the Latino vote. Of course, other policies in support of Latinos are also confounding factors but I believe this a dominant component. My parents are now U.S. citizens and have the right to fully express their political views. Fortunately I was born in the U.S. specifically Los Angeles, California where I share the same democratic views as people in my community, school, and work. The diversity in Los Angeles is amazing and I couldn’t picture this area ever being conservative.

There’s just no way that would work in such a distinct area. I grew up learning core values taught by my parents such as to treat everybody equally and always have an open mind. As a kid I didn’t think much of it, I figured it was just “adult talk” you can say. However as I grew older and matured, I started realizing what my parents meant and how those very simple words were incredibly significant because they be implied almost anywhere, especially in politics. I find ironic how I was never really the political type but here I am in my political science class expressing my political standpoint. Democrats, in my opinion, have an open mind on policies and how some policies can affect certain people.

On the other hand, still in my opinion, Republicans only try to benefit a certain group of people while others suffer which to me is not morally just. My take on political parties has to do with a party being equal and constantly fighting for equal rights. I strongly believe the Democratic party does a great job on that. Social equality is a key component in society as it provides equal opportunity for everyone. I thank my parents for their profound influence on my political ideology.

As I mentioned before in order to greater our country, we must take actions to erase the existing social inequality that currently exists. It’s unfortunate that a good majority of the U.S still does not support citizens having the freedom to marry whom they choose to marry. California, for one, fully supports gay marriage as do I. That doesn’t mean I am a homosexual, it simply means I endorse equality and freedom for everyone.

I mean since our country so heavily prides itself on freedom, I don’t see the problem here. Homosexuals are not the only targeted group, also African Americans. These two minority groups are discriminated because of the social inequality that exists. Until recently, Republicans used to oppose same sex marriage unlike Democrats who have always supported full equality for same sex marriage. Conservatives do not acknowledge gay marriage as it is usually against their traditional and moral values. The bigger picture here is simply the inequality being served towards these groups of people.

More importantly the fact that we are all citizens with equal rights but somehow there’s still room in the air for prejudice to ever so easily flow by. Most conservatives don’t think with an open mind for all and tend to be very biased. That negative connotation to certain minority groups need to be removed for good to live in peace. As for African Americans, I don’t really think there’s a big connection between them and conservatives but there is still an issue about them to discuss because it pertains to the social injustice in the U.S. Being African American in the United States is controversial and it’s unfortunate I have to say that but it’s the sad truth. Over these past 2 years there has been an excess amount of innocent black lives lost due to police shootings.

Black people are wrongfully killed and there’s too many controversies on why. I hate the pull out the racist card but in my opinion, African Americans are targeted because they are looked down on due to the color of their skin. I’m getting into a very controversial topic, but I need to get the weight off my shoulders. According to NBC News, “Years of life lost from police violence were greatest among younger age groups across racial and ethnic groups, but the distribution of YLLs was higher among even younger ages in people of color compared with whites.” In simple terms, African American people are targeted more than white people. This discrimination issue just doesn’t make any sense to me. We as a country need to learn to accept everyone for who they are and have a liberal view on life.

I believe my age also plays a big part in my political stand. I mentioned earlier that since I am younger, I am not accustomed to the “old-school” way of thought. It is believed that as one grows older, their intellectual curiosity tends to drop and for that matter there is an increase in conservatism. Older people tend to have a conservative political view which to me is ironic because they were liberal in their younger years and now they’re conservative. It’s ultimately one’s judgement and how they perceive the world. Just because one is old doesn’t mean they are automatically conservative, but it does factor in because they most definitely grew up than per say a kid born in the early 2000’s. Age says a lot about an individual although it does not sum up their perceptions or beliefs.

All in all, I stand true and tall to my far left liberal wing as I support the Democratic party. I support an unprejudiced and moral approach in society as we tend to lack these values as a country. Most of political ideology is generated from my upbringing, however as I am aging I am cultivating my own ideologies in regards to modern policies and what is happening in the country at the moment. I realized I was a liberal from a young age and continue to support these views.
