The whole idea of the self-concept goes a long way, especially in today’s time. To think about it, even how we see ourselves now is based off what ideas have been recorded and implanted in our minds through society. So, one thing that can always be in question all the time is whether anything we think about ourselves is our thinking or just something that has it been manipulated in us in some way. Even looking at the idea of introspection, people don’t want to look at themselves. No one wants their flaws, their faults, and their evils to be pointed out if you think about it.

One interesting thing about the self-theory is how people try to escape themselves. For example, turning to drugs as an escape from one’s self and one’s thoughts, how scary it must be to fight that hard to escape yourself. No wonder it is so common that people turn to believe in a higher power to save them. Our self-concept can develop in many different ways. One way is through self-assessment. Think of this self-assessment as looking into a mirror and reading your biography. ‘I am 5-8′, I have brown hair, I’m a daughter, I am a student,’ are all examples of the conclusions I might reach through self-appraisal.

Though self-appraisal is objective, there are subjective elements, too. Another way we develop our self-concept is through social comparison. Here, the concept is that we improve the way we love and see ourselves by how we compare or measure up to others. This could be our friends, coworkers, movie stars, models, sports figures, and so on. For example, every time we look in a magazine and see those perfectly sculpted bodies modeling clothing, we realize that we don’t measure up. This could lead to an unhealthy feeling of failure. We can believe, due to this comparison, that we are less than OK. Self-Concept can be viewed by its levels of self-esteem, its flexibility, and its resistance to change. Even looking at self-esteem, it has a powerful effect on the way we end up relating to other people.

Yet accoring to the idea of self concept, those who dislike themselves are likely to believe that others won’t like them, however; one thing that I personally have noticed is that when people typically don’t like themselves, instead of thinking others wont either, they seek others for approval of themselves. They recognize that others possibly wont be as critical to them as they are on themselves. Hence, it creates hostility towards those individuals to gain likeableness. High levels of Self-Esteem, on the other hand, are also opposite from what I’ve seen. People with hig self esteem tend to not want to be accepted by others. Not saying that approval isnt important, but these are the ones who seek more approval from their own self and don’t worry much about others. A healthy self-concept is adaptable, in that it must adjust to the change of everyday interactions to remain realistic.

In conclusion, a healthy and strong self-concept will help you to get ahead in life. It allows you to increase your potential and get the most out of your strengths, talents, and abilities. However, a weak and shaky self-concept will delay your progress. This weak area of the self-concept will most likely lead to sabotaging behavior, and as a result oof that, you will struggle to follow through with your actions and thereby fail to accomplish the goals and intentions you have set for yourself. The most important thing to remember here is the influence that other people have on your self-concept.

Through rejection, judgment, scorn, and disapproval, other people often sway how we can feel about ourselves. Ultimately affecting the labels you give yourself, and fundamentally what you believe about yourself, your abilities, and the world around you. Your self-worth is connected to the people in your life. Therefore, if you are struggling with an unhealthy self-concept, then it could very well be a result of the daily interactions you have with people who don’t always escalate you but can somti mes be the very ones that downgrade how you see yourself.
