Have you ever been bullied, hurt, or put down? Well, here’s some good news and some bad news. Bullying is being taken care of at school to a greater degree than ever before. Isn’t it wonderful that bullying is being taken care of? Well, don’t get too excited. Online bullying is a new form of bullying and is potentially much more destructive than real-life bullying. Cyber bullying has become a modern epidemic that needs to be stopped!

Are you aware that, due to cyber harassment, some children are turning to self-harm? Any form of bullying causes increased stress and depression in children, adults, and, especially, teens. In fact, a leading cause of teen suicide worldwide is depression due to bullying. While on the topic of suicide, let’s turn an eye to the family, friends, and many others affected by a human being’s suicide. Before you are tempted to cyber bully, think about whether you want to be the person who puts so many others through the severe grief of loosing a loved one. You may go online to escape reality, but the loss of a beloved child is excruciatingly real. So then, if bullying is strictly disallowed in school, then why is it even remotely okay online?

Perhaps your child is enthralled with hand-held smart phones. Well, consider the following: if your child can read and has internet access, do you not think that they might be tempted to pick up some bad habits which could include cyber bullying? On the other hand, maybe your child has become an unwilling victim of such bullying! Have you thought about how your ten-year-old’s grades suddenly changed and why they may be failing? Or, does your child take off sick days to stay home needlessly? Cyber bullies could be harassing your child. And, unfortunately, children seldom will tell their parents when they are being cyber bullied.

Even more upsetting, the government is not consistent in enforcing its own laws regarding cyber bullying. Is it not well known and agreed upon that cyber bullying is a form of cyber-terrorism? And clearly, cyber terrorism is illegal. So cyber bullying, a type of cyber terrorism, should be equally illegal and equally prosecuted. The use of a computer network or the public internet to cause destruction or harm for personal objectives demands the same types of enforcement and prosecution as other cyber terrorism acts.

Cyber bullying is a coward’s way of harming and destroying someone else’s self-esteem! Have you seen those kids at school who sit around with their heads in their hands…the ones who, and when they do look up, have eyes devoid of happiness? More than likely, those kids have experienced horrible bullying and have had every bit of their self-confidence destroyed. The distraught children affected by cyber bullying have been tormented mentally and emotionally… and that can lead, sometimes, to physical harm. Yes, it is sad and painful to observe yet observing it serves as a call to action!

With this in mind, where do you stand? Are you going to contribute to cyber bullying? Or will you stand against it? Do not be afraid to take your part in standing against it. You can help in stopping this hurtful and destructive epidemic. Help end the emotional plague -stop cyber bullying now!
