Problem statement

There is tremendous need for coordinated and accessible services to be given to Kanyaa primary school .The school is in the slum area of Mathari area three in Nairobi County. There is no source of security and the livelihood of the residents in that area is in dire need of basic needs. The source of income for most parents is below average. Unlike most others, the school does not have sponsors or any government assistance. These school children are in deplorable conditions. In most cases, they miss a lot in terms of education. Their concentration is affected due the sorry state of the facility, not to mention the nutritional needs. Basics- like water and sanitation, school uniforms, shoes and text books are hard to come by.

Project description

The school has 212 students that need textbooks to enhance their education. Unfortunately the state of the parents’ capacity to buy the textbooks is wanting. In short there is no source of income for the parents to buy the books. We would want to undertake a project that is viable and can sustain the problem adequately. For this reason, we opted to buy textbooks for class eight and class seven students. Specifically, for the most essential subjects like english, mathematics, science and social studies.

Services

Kanyaa primary school ensures the provision of nursery, primary and formal education. The home ensures access to education for the drop outs through non formal education aimed at preparing them to be self-reliant.

Nature Of The Project

The main purpose of the project is the provision of school books to the needy so that they could have a chance of growing with the dignity they deserve.

The right to education is a basic right according to the constitution of Kenya; further support was seen with the new government policy of offering free education to pupils, which also is accompanied by the provision of text books that aid the learning of children in schools.
However there was the need of school books as lack of reading materials makes the child feel less equipped with knowledge. To curb this project on the provision of school books aimed to give an opportunity for the needy child to fulfill their right to education and eventually better their lives.

During the Handing Over ceremony

It is important as community to keep in mind that besides our children going to school there’s significant costs that remain, including the cost of providing a school books for a child. This is because when the child feels supported with the books then it reduces stress and fuels the chances of growing up into productive members of the society. It is with no doubt this project will impact positively on the students in that school.

The environment is very welcoming greeted with bubbly faces of small children playing along the corridors. Many children do not perform well due to lack of reading materials. The initiative however small will definitely go a long way in strengthening the school and creating a sense of belonging. Books provision is a worthwhile cause because performance will improve as there will be reading materials available. Furthermore investing in children by promoting their education in ensuring reading materials are taken care of removes the burden to the management of the school.

Recommendations/ Conclusions

Initially before the commencement of the project on the provision of the books the center had recommended the construction of a classroom which was a good project but proved insupportable due to the construction costs as estimated by the contractor we therefore settled on the latter because of the urgent need of the course books.

In the long haul the community and the schools that the children attend should under a book drive in that they ensure that the students have adequate materials for reading that will give them a better fighting chance in life. The project will lead to increase in school participation as the cases of poor performance will almost be unheard of. This project has opened other avenues for other well-wishers or donor to look into improving the lives of the children on the facility. Today USIU team made a difference with the provision of uniform tomorrow is someone else to recover their dreams.
