Community development is a process where community members come together as a ream to generate solutions to common problems or developments that will improve their community. A community wellbeing often ecolves from small initiatives within a small group to large initiatives that involve an entire community. Community development is a grassroots process by which communities come together and become more organized and plan together to develop healthy lifestyle options, empower themselves to reduce poverty and unemployment, create employment and economic opportunities. Overall community development seeks to improve quality of life. Effective community development results in shared responsibilities and mutual benefits.
A Community can be defined as a group of people who don’t just live in the same area, but also share the same interests, experiences and often concerns about the area in which they live. Often when individuals have lived in a street or area for a while they become familiar with each other and the issues surrounding them. Children often attend the same schools and in many cases grow up together, again sharing the similar experiences. In some instances adults may work together, and quite commonly all community members will share the same doctors, dentists, hospitals, health visitors and other public services and facilities. According to Seidel & Lewis, 2017 “ Middleboro and Hillsboro County are classified as non-metropolitan areas. Middleboro has been the economic, political, and social hub for Hillsboro County. The average family size is 2.57 people.”
Hillsboro County is great place to raise a family as it is known for its social and economic stability. Multiple generations of families live in Middleboro and the surrounding towns that make up Hillsboro County (Seidel & Lewi, 2017). Jasper is a major town in Hillsboro County. It is a growing community that benefits from being close to Capital City, the state capital (Seidel & Lewis, 2017). Jasper is becoming a bedroom community for Capital City and is continuing to develop as an economy that is independent from Milddleboro (Seidel & Lewis, 2017). Jasper benefits from major industrial development. “ U.S. Parts arrived in town, and today the company occupied almost 60 percent of the Jasper Industrial Park, a campus established 5 years ago. National yearbook is expected to fill the remaining capacity in the Jasper Industrial Park within 5 years” (Seidel & Lewis, 2017). Jasper is known to be a manufacturing center. As Jasper has grown faster it is partially due to the employment opportunities that have come about for the community. In 2017 Blue Bear Ale opened a new site in Jasper. U.S. Parts employs 2.2 percent of Jaspers workforce.
When it comes to Jasper’s healthcare it is the home of Medical Associates Outside of Middleboro and Jasper. Medical Associates was founded in 1951, it is a multispecialty physician group with offices in downtown Middleboro and Jasper. Medical Associates offers many ambulatory services such as ambulatory surgical services. All of the physicians at Medical Associates are board certified. “In 2017, it introduced Medical Associates Express, a 24/7 walk-in clinic, to it’s Jasper office.
Other health services in Jasper include Jasper gardens, which is a 110 bed long term care facility. The Carter Home which is also a 110 bed long term facility, Socklalexis Center, which offers behavioral health and counseling services the the Jasper schools. Greenwood Group is a provider of substance abuse therapy staffed by psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, a social worker, substance abuse counselors, and a health and wellness personnel.
Jasper represents the population with the greatest number of people under the age of 44 and Statesville and Jasper have arguably the youngest populations with over 90 percent under the age of 64. In comparison, Boalsburg has by far the largest percentage of people over the age of 64 with just under half of the population over traditional retirement age.
