All life needs gravity, or everything would die. Life would not exist without gravity since it holds down our atmosphere and the air we need to breathe. The sun’s gravity helps the Earth orbit the sun. All life on Earth needs the sun’s energy to keep everything at a perfect temperature, and gravity helps that happen. Gravity is a constant force, and it keeps our muscles and bones up and working. Without gravity, life would be nonexistent, and the Earth’s oceans, lakes, and rivers would depart.

Gravity is the force that attracts a body towards the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. Sir Issac Newton, an English mathematician, and mathematician, and physicist who lived from 1643-1727, was the man who discovered gravity. Newton discovered gravity in 1687 when he saw a falling apple while thinking about the forces of nature. “Many people believe that Issac Newton possessed the greatest scientific mind in history”(Newton). Newton was named after his father, and his mother wanted him to become a farmer. Newton invented calculus also, but he wasn’t a smart investor.

Newton was born on January 4, 1643, in Woolsthorpe Manor House, United Kingdom. He died on March 31, 1727, in Kensington. Newton went to Trinity College from 1667-1668. Newton had a large family, with his mother, Hannah Ayscough, his father Issac Newton Sr., his two grandmothers Margery Blythe, and Ann Newton, his two grandfathers, James Ayscough, and Robert Newton, and finally his brother and sisters, Hannah, Mary, and Benjamin Smith. Newton had no kids; he died a virgin.

Isaac Newton was awarded his first honor in 1665, at the age of 22, it was a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1667, he was elected a fellow of Trinity College and later earned a master’s degree from Trinity. Academic honors followed quickly. Newton was appointed a Fellow of Trinity College in 1667. He became the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in 1668, a role he would fill until his resignation in 1701. In 1672, Isaac Newton was admitted to The Royal Society, of which he became president in 1703. Newton was elected to Parliament on behalf of Cambridge University for the first time in 1688 and again in 1701. Newton became a foreign associate of the French Academie Royale des Sciences in 1699. In 1696, Newton was named master of the Royal Mint. After he died in 1727, he became the first scientist to be honored with an internship in Westminster Abbey.

Some interesting facts about Newton involved him hating his stepfather. Newton was expected to die as a child, for he was 3 months early, and his body could fit in a quart mug. He was a very bad stutterer, but it put him in good company. Other people who stuttered were Aristotle, Moses, Winston Churchill, and Charles Darwin. Newton was born on January 4, but he was also born on Christmas day. At the time of his birth, the Gregorian calendar hadn’t been adopted by England yet. Records indicate that Isaac was born on Christmas and baptized on New Year’s Day. When the Gregorian calendar was finally adopted by England, it needed to be adjusted by 11 days, making January 4 Isaac’s real birthday. Newton was a genius, but not a politician.

Not only did Newton discover gravity but also Newton’s Law of Motion. His discoveries have played a big role in how everyone lives today. Even though that is a lot of work and people may think he had help, he worked alone. “The legend is that Newton discovered gravity when he saw a falling apple while thinking about the forces of nature” (Stanford). Even though every website and article says that never happened. Newton still had to realize that some force must have been acting on falling objects like apples because if not then they would not start falling from rest. Newton knew that the moon would fly far from Earth without some sort of gravitational pull; therefore, he called this force “gravity” and determined that gravitational force exists between all objects.

Gravity is a force that tries to pull two objects toward each other. Anything which has mass also has a gravitational pull. The more massive an object is, the stronger its gravitational pull is. Earth’s gravity is what keeps you on the ground and what causes objects to fall. Gravity is described not as a force, but as a consequence of the curvature of spacetime. The curvature of spacetime is caused by massive bodies, which determine the path that objects travel.

Honestly, people don’t know what gravity is, but they know how it behaves. Astronomers calculated that in around 400 billion years, the whole Universe will seem dark and empty, not able to see anything else than the galaxy itself. Gravity will get stronger or weaker throughout time if the body of mass attracts mass, sheds mass, or becomes more or less dense. Scientists know a lot about gravity, but there is a way more they can discover. They know what it is, and what it is made of. They proposed that gravity is made of quantum particles, which they called ‘gravitons.’ Anywhere there is gravity. Gravity was first measured by the Cavendish experiment in 1797–1798 by British scientist Henry Cavendish, who was the first experiment to measure the force of gravity between masses in the laboratory and the first to yield accurate values for the gravitational constant.

We know how gravity is a force. the force that attracts two bodies toward each other, the force that causes apples to fall toward the ground and the planets to orbit the sun. The more massive an object is, the stronger its gravitational pull. We know how there is no gravity in space. The reason that gravity is not in space is that objects tend to orbit planets instead of hitting them. Orbiting means that an object falls towards a planet due to gravity and continually misses it. “Newton showed Kepler’s law of planetary motion were only approximately correct and supplied the quantitative corrections that made these measurements more precise” (Newton). “A body at rest will stay at rest, a body in motion will stay in motion unless either body is acted upon by some outside force” (Newton).

Even though there is gravity on Earth, there is none in outer space. Places like the moon have no gravity because it is less massive than the Earth. Weight measures in gravitation attraction exerts on your body. Astronauts are floating around when they are in space. On Earth, if a ball drops it falls to the ground. That is because of gravity, but in space, everything floats. “Scientists will tell you that the laws of physics do indeed apply in outer space, and it’s not a lack of air that accounts for the absence of gravity” (Wonders). Gravity exists everywhere, even in outer space.

Although it is so small, astronauts get a weightless feeling not because of no gravity, but because they are falling at the same rate as their spaceship. “We have sent a large number of spacecraft and satellites into space. This must reduce the mass of the planet, albeit by a small amount. Does this reduction affect Earth’s gravity with respect to the sun and moon” (Lighter Earth”. “Even though the strength of gravity has never been tested in very weak fields, the idea that a force of nature should change its strength so readily is unpalatable to most” (Smash and Grab).

Gravity all things with mass or energy including planets, stars, galaxies, and even light are brought toward one another. On Earth, gravity gives weight to physical objects, and the Moon’s gravity causes the ocean tides. Newton published a theory of gravity in 1687. Although others had thought about it before him, Newton was the first to create a theory that applied to all objects, large and small, using mathematics that was ahead of its time. A lack of gravity would eventually take its toll on our very planet, the Earth would most likely break apart into chunks and float off into space. Without the force of gravity to hold it together, the intense pressures at its core would cause it to burst open in a large explosion.

Gravity is very important to us. We could not live on Earth without it. The sun’s gravity keeps Earth in orbit around it, keeping us at a comfortable distance to enjoy the sun’s light and warmth. It holds down our atmosphere and the air we need to breathe. I feel more comfortable with my surroundings, now that I have done my research. I feel like there is way more we can know about gravity since we don’t know every part of the galaxy. Gravity can work in ways we never knew in places lightyears away. Gravity is like the ocean, there is so much that we don’t know about it.
