C. Wright Mills was an American sociologist in the early 20’“ century and is the author of The Sociological Imagination. In the first chapter of his wMills discusses various topics; some of which include, what the sociological imagination is, the importance of history and biography, and the difference between troubles and issues. Sociological imagination according to Mills is about observing the world around you as opposed to only looking at the life you live as an individual. If one is only aware of the things that personally impact their life, they are at a disadvantage in society In order to have a good understanding of the world, one has to pay attention to all the individuals around them and use others as tools to help better their own lives.
Sociological imagination also gives us a better understanding of history and biography. In the first chapter of his winovel Mills recognizes the importance of history and biography, It is extremely important as a sociologist to recognize how important history and biography is. Every social study in one way or another relates back to biography and history. The way the two interact assisted many sociologists in analyzing society, It assisted them to understand many aspects of sociology, such as, what the structure of this society is as a whole, where society stands in human history, what are the mechanics in which this society is changing and many others. Biography and history allows not only sociologists, but also members of society to have a better understanding of what is going on in the world, In his book Mills also discusses the differences between troubles and issues. Although most may see these two as interchangeable, Mills feels that “This distinction is an essential tool of the sociological imagination and a feature of all classic work in social science.”
The difference between an issue and a trouble are quite simple, A trouble is a personal matter and an issue is a public matter. Trouble is something that bothers someone in their personal lives; only that person and others close to that person are affected by the problem An issue on the other hand is something going on in the world that may bother someone. Many people know about an issue and people of society tend to have similar opinions and are affected in a similar way in accordance to the issue. In the novel, The Sociological Imagination the first chapter “The Promise” covers various subjects on sociology and the sociological imagination. Mills was able administer a great deal of information in the first chapter of his book. Some of the content in the chapter included, the definition of the sociological imagination, how history and biology are important in getting a better understanding of society and how issues and troubles are similar, but different things.
