Taking a Stand; Ta Nashi Cotes African Americans have Historically been subjects to severe oppression, this oppresion is deeply embedded in American society. Inequality lies in political, economic, and social aspects of life for most African Americans. The problems faced by many African Americans today are rooted from slavery, hundreds of yeas of Jim Crow, a period of legalized descrimnation, and, society’s ongoing racism and discrimination “justified” by these periods of past. With a desire to bring a spotlight to these issues, Ta Nashi Cotes a well recognized African American author and journalist, pushes the raw history of America to the forefront of society’s view. His prevalence on all platforms of social media has ignited the discussion of racial inequality in the United States.

He has the ability to share his message, reaching multiple generational audiences around the world. His intelligence and practice of journalism allows him to powerfully affect these audiences and demonstrate the negative effects of racism. He is reshaping the American myth of slavery. Despite advancement by African American men and women in many aspects of life, race often remains a fator continuously pushing african americans several steps behind whites. There is an inequality in wealth, socio-economic status, education, employment, and housing, dividing black and white Americans.(“The Oppression of Black People in the USA Today: League for the Fifth International.”) Americns strive for prosperity and oppertunity for succes. This goal can be described as the American dream. It directly coralates to the idealistic aspect of owning a home. There is a still large challenge for african americans to atain homeownership.

People’s wealth is directly connected to their homeownership, homeownership remains a large factor in a family’s financial status and achievements. Black homeownership is as low as it was when housing discrimination was legal(Singletary). The lack of equality in america has lead to this enormous gap in generational wealth. This wealth gap has prevailed for decades(Hanks). This troubling trend of unequal wealth roots from racial profiling or redlining and is faced by many black families today(Singletary) . Efforts such as subsidized housing taken to adress this gap faced by the black american population have been too little and too late. They have failed because society has failed to come to relize its own central problem which is its own past and current of racism and discrimination. African Americans are generations behind, and must be compensated for. The inequalitys of our past have a direct effect on dispritys endured today. Ta Nashi cotes relates his wrighting to this idea.
