There comes a time in many people’s lives where they have many choices to make. This time is graduating from high school. Leading up to this moment millions of students are asking themselves what lies beyond high school, Whether it is college, vocational school, the service, or work, they all have many hard choices. For those going to college, the main question they ask themselves is, “how am I going to pay, if I can even afford college?” This is a hard question to ask, and is a question that turns many people‘s decisions about their future, With many plans and proposals about free college tuition being brought up, many people are agreeing with this ideal College tuition should be free and provided by the United States. This college doesn’t have to be a known school or a 4 year school. This can be a community college to provide students with a start of an education that could get them an associate’s degree and possibly provide them with an incentive to go to a 4 year school to get a higher education.

This could help the nation as a whole and help millions of people. As of right now there is a plan in progress. This plan was brought up by President Barack Obama and is called “America’s Promise” It focuses on giving free tuition to community colleges. This plan if put in action would help. College is a place where there is an ever-increasing number of enrolled students and an increasing cost of tuition. There are three colleges; public two-year (community college), public four-year, and private four-year, All of these vary in price, public two-year colleges being the least and private institutions being the most expensive. Just in the last ten years all of these colleges have been experiencing inflation in the cost of tuition upwards of 20-30%. In the 2004- 2005 year, the average cost of tuition for community colleges, public universities, and private universities were $2,615, $6,448, and $25,215 respectively.

In 2014-2015 these average costs are at an increased rate. They are at $3,347, $9,804, and $31,231[Colll]. These are the costs just for tuition College can include many fees, room and board, and other expenses Room and board accounts for very much of the cost for college. With these combined, college can be very expensive and hard to afford for very many individuals. This is what Obama’s plan is trying to help, It will give the estimated 21 million college students, and other students who get deterred from college because of the cost, a different route to go; a route to spend less money, and a route to a higher education, “America’s College Promise” was brought up during one of Barack Obama’s addresses, The plan is to provide students with free tuition for community colleges. It would cover full and part-time students with a maintained 2.5 grade point average and it would apply to the students who plan on getting a four-year college degree or go into job training.

It will provide an increased incentive to work hard and do well in high school and beyond This plan would be financed by state lottery funds and some other governmental funding. There are programs like this in some states. The “Tennessee Promise” is a very successful plan like Obama’s. It gives high school seniors who qualify for the program a chance to get free tuition, These qualifications are that you have to do eight hours of community service, have to fill out your FAFSA, attend two meetings, and apply to a community college or a vocational school. This program has 90 percent of high school seniors in the state and the number of minority populations is increasing in Tennessee colleges. This shows that programs that provide free tuition help many families and people. The programs also can help increase the chance for a better job in the future. The revolving world is always changing and developing.

This includes thejob force. Jobs are requiring more education and have many more qualifications Even the jobs that are not considered good by many people are requiring at least a high school degree and maybe even a college degree Companies and businesses are trying to promote education and develop their employees. As of right now, 59 percent of jobs require post-secondary training such as college or vocational school[Mar15], So as these jobs’ requirements change, what will happen to the people without a college education? They are jobless. “America’s College Promise” can help this. It can help people get an education desperately needed. Whether it is an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, or even just some college education, it can boost lifetime earnings drastically helping many people Obama’s plan is devoted to educating the many millions of people who choose not to go to college because they cannot financially find a way to go.

It emphasizes to stay in school and to try your hardest to succeed It is devoted to helping the millions of young Americans get the education they will need to succeed and function in the world, as it is an increasingly knowledge-driven world There are many critics on the president’s plan and the idea of free tuition. There are many different opinions. One main opinion held by critic is that free tuition to community colleges will underfund and further privatize four»year universities They believe that community colleges do not provide a well—rounded and quality education[Val15]. This is not true. it is proven that community colleges provide a very well educationt Some are not as rigorous and tough as the first two years of a four-year school, but that can be very beneficial. Many students need those first two years to get acclimated and to “get going” on the track to graduating and going on to a bigger more advanced institution.

Free community college tuition would provide a great and benefiting education to millions of students. This wouldn‘t cause underfunding either. The money promoting this project is coming from the state lottery and does not interfere with the funds of public or private four~year universities. This plan would do nothing but help America’s people and economy. The idea of college tuition is liked by many and disliked by many. This needs to happen. College tuition is good for America’s society and the economy. Even the president thinks this should happen as he is planning a project, “America‘s College Promise” is the name and it would allow kids to go to community college for free.

He is devoting this to emphasize success in school and devoting this project to helping the less fortunate in getting an education that will them in their future. This is beneficial because it will increase pay and give some people an incentive to work hard in the classroom It gives many people the education they would never have because of the increasing cost of college tuition. “America‘s College Promise” orjust the idea of free tuition sounds pretty good and has many valuable outcomes that will millions upon millions of people. It doesn’t just sound good, it is good and it needs to be put in place.
