89% of the child population are growing up without having to worry about work or getting a job. Unfortunately 11% of the child population is trapped and forced onto a field, a factory, a mine, or . Many of us are given opportunities for a proper education, but there are children out there who suffer from child labor, child trafficking, and slavery.
Child Labor is the use of children in a business or industry. Around the world there are 218 million children between the ages of 5 and 17 that are currently employed. Among the 218 million children, 152 are million are victims of child labor. Having to work at such a young age interferes with their abilities to have a childhood, attend a proper school, and it can mentally, physically, and emotionally take a toll on the children. Child labor is mostly seen in Africa and Southern and Western Asia, but still exists around the world.
There are many organizations and movements that advocate for erasing child labor. The March Against Child Labor has played a big part in accomplishing this goal. This organization was founded in January 17, 1998 by Kailash Satyarthi, a nobel peace prize winner. Their sole purpose is to mobilise worldwide efforts to protect and promote the rights of all children, especially the right to receive a free and meaningful education and the right to be free from economic exploitation and from performing any work that is likely to be harmful to the child’s physical, mental, moral or social development.
Global March states that they want “to eliminate child labour by questioning, attacking and changing the systems that force children to work around the globe in any given conditions. To do so, their is the need to advocate for policy changes.” They also have a three pronged strategy or a Triangular Paradigm. This Triangular Paradigm includes three topics that are impacting the children the most – the elimination of child labor, education for all and poverty alleviation.
I believe that every child should be given the equal opportunity to a proper education and not just thrown into a working environment. They should be given a chance to make the decision that changes their life and The March Against Child Labor promotes children to actively take part in the choice that changes their lives and empowers them to speak up and use their voice for them to be heard and for the cause they are fighting for to spread.
I agree with The March Against Child Labor and their approach on getting the people involved to speak up. The more people that support this cause, the easier it is to make a change. The Global March Against Child Labor has also decided to to support their partners all around the world to work together with government and non-government agencies. The want to make sure that child labor is erased from the globe and that no child left alone in the process. By partnering up with outside organization and creating connections, they have found a way to build a stronger following for their cause.
The March Against Child Labor has participated in many events as well as hosting a few, too. They have created multiple communities to end child labor, supported actions in countries towards their achievement of the SDG, Sustainable Development Goals which are more commonly known as Global Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 globals goals created by the General Assembly in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet, and make sure everyone is at peace.
It’s not easy to convince or get in reach of someone holding a higher position to help the Global March Against Child Labor. The organization will have to prove that they are an organized organization with a main goal that is possible to complete. The Global March Against Child Labor has proved this and was able to hold regional and even global meetings to discuss challenges and solutions for their cause.
This organization is very straightforward and organized on what they would like to accomplish in the future. I believe that every child should be given the opportunity to a quality education and shouldn’t be forced into labor or slavery. They are going to bring all stakeholders together to promote campaigns and common goals and actions.
