After the second French Revolution, the Europe was in state of more peaceful time. During this time the nations could develop their states and increase the wealth for them in case of technology and economy. When Europe would be able to recover more beliefs around the people are going to be discovered. Since people are relying more on their nations a new movement is established called Nationalism.

Nationalism is a movement where states and territories of the same nation are unified. This movement really helped strengthen some of the nations and unite the people to celebrate their country. One of the good examples can be seen Mazzini’s document, An Essay On the Duties of Duties of Man addressed to Workingmen. Mazzini was proclaimed as a proclaimed as a prophet of Italy where he brought the whole nation together in his speeches about nationalism. The first paragraph says: “I intend to speak to you of your duties. I intend to speak to you of you according to the dictates of my heart, of the holiest things, we know; to speak to you of God, of Humanity, of the Fatherland and the Family.”(Mazzini 127) and it indicates how strong his beliefs for nationalism are. The Nationalism also inspired people during the time of war Some of this can be seen in the document called King William Explains the cause of the War with Austria. Some of the inspirational words Williams mentions are “From the blood shed together on the field of battle I hoped that a brotherhood in arms would spring which might in turn lead to a firmer union resting upon mutual respect and gratitude.” (King William 118).

Along with Nationalism there was another movement called Imperialism. An Imperialism is a policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force. This is more explained in John Arthur Hobsons document Imperialism. Hobson goes on in this document to describe “The leading characteristic of modern imperialism, the competition of rival empires, is the product of this same period.”(John Arthur Hobson 158) Hobson also mentions all the countries different point of views such as France, Italy, Russia, and more. An influence Imperialism had on the Boxer Rebellion, which is described in the document of an Account of the Boxer Uprising. This was an event where Great Power to suppress the rebellion to secure the right to trade with China. It showcases the extending power over countries with diplomacy and armies. It is best described in second paragraph where it says “For several years before the present troubles all the resources of foreign diplomacy, backed by moral demonstrations of the physical force of fleets and arms, have been needed to secure due respect for the treaty rights of foreigners.”(William McKinley 151)

Right now we established how Nationalism and Imperialism works. The important questions we should ask our self is if these movements brought any positives and negatives. From positive side of point, we can say it reunited people together so they can develop pride for their country and be more active in terms of celebration of their culture and protecting the nation. On the other side however this would ignite the tension for future conflicts between the states, increasing the military force, and it would eventually turn into major warfare between other countries that will be known as World War 1 as we know it today. At the end these movements brought us many positives and negatives. Usually, any move is strong as the belief of the people in it and that can lead to consequences as we see later on.
