The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization that was tasked to maintain international peace and security founded on October 24, 1945, in San Francisco, California. Within the United Nations exist the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which is a collection of seventeen global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 which consist of gender equality, no poverty, zero hunger, etc. Although there are seventeen global goals the seventeenth goal ‘partnerships for the goals’ will be the focus of the paper.
Sustainable Development Goal seventeen wants to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development by strengthening global partnerships to support and achieve the ambitious targets of the 2030 Agenda. These targets include bringing together national governments, the international community, civil society, the private sector, along with other actors.
In 2016 one of the goals of the 2030 Agenda was to enhance support to developing countries, in particular, the least developed countries and small island developing states. In 2017 in spite of positive developments, a goal was to have a stronger commitment to partnership and cooperation that is needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The push for a stronger commitment would be achieved by requiring coherent policies, an enabling environment for sustainable development at all levels and by all actors and a reinvigorated Global Partnership for Sustainable Development. In 2018 the goal was to seek to strengthen global partnerships to support and achieve the ambitious targets of the 2030 Agenda.
In conclusion, the seventeenth goal is to revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is important because it aspires to have everyone come together to combat poverty, tackle inequalities and combat climate change. The Agenda, with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals, matters because it is a worldwide organization that calls for all countries developed or undeveloped to tackle common issues. Everyone can help fight for the cause by encouraging your government to partner with businesses for the implementation of the SDGs, creating or joining groups in your environment to rally action on the implementation of the SDGs and by registering allies on the SDGs Partnerships Platform to inform, educate and network.
