The movie Dear White People is based on three college students whom are trying to figure out who they are while facing life challenges on a daily basic. The movie challenge black and white students to defend themselves and to fight for their race and culture. The movie presents three students which are the main character of the film. Sam, Troy and Coco established their main ideas of living and surviving in a black community at the prestigious Ivy League university of Winchester, which was predominantly white. The movie also gives a representation of how does it feel to live in a black person community for a day. The author illustrates the stereotypical ‘blackness’ and ‘whiteness’ features to be able to presents the forth races issues that are happening in our society.

The host of the radio show “Dear White People” is Sam and he is trying to bring awareness of the existing discrimination black students need to go through regularly in University that are predominately white. He also wrote a book tip for black students. The book was written based on cultural language and terms, and it was for the individual that identify with their “blackness” race. Only people who identify as black would be able understand it. She describe three main ideas on how black people can navigate and handle the black and black contemplations. She stated, “There are only a few ways colored folks can survive in a place like this.” A place like this is referring to Ivy League schools or school who are predominately for white people. If we think about this, socially or culturally the accomplishment are inhabited for the most part by white upper-middle class students. Organizations like this tend to replicate most of their people in their systems, main morals and beliefs. Sam mentioned the three main identities that black people take on to manage the conflicts between black and white gaze, which is enforced on black people.

Colandrea “Coco” is another main character of the movie and she wants to fit in with the white student at her college but she does not want to tell people that she was raised in the black community. She is afraid that her white friends might reject her or look at her differently. She wants to change her lifestyle by living on a big house and having straight hair like white people do. Coco puts on a straight weave seeking for acceptance but she also contradict herself because on her radio show she said that white folks tan their skin and also get lip injections seeking a black person look. Furthermore, she is trying to act extra black to be able to obtain a place on a reality TV show. Coco criticizes Sam show “Dear White People” and try to make her feel bad about her blackness. Coco thinks that Sam is bougie and mentioned that her radio show is a propaganda. Coco wanted everyone to be equal and recognize for who they are not because of the color of their skin or their hair, race or culture, she was seeking equal rights for her black people.

Troy likes to play sport and he is also dating a white girl. Troy and Coco are very similar because they know how to get involve with the white and the black community depending on the situation that they are put in. Troy family are privilege and he grow up being privilege as well. That’s why he is being accepted by the white community and he can easily switch back and forth. Even though Troy fit in on the white community he lose power of his own race and that’s why some of his friends don’t accept his white girlfriend.

To summarize, this movie presents the main characters to show our society what is like to be living in a black community nowadays. We can see that each of the main characters have different ideas to express themselves and how they feel. Sam knowledge of black people increased, Coco gained knowledge on the white community and Troy learned about the black and white community. Even though these students struggled to be recognized and find harmony with their identities because they were required to be sensitive to the black and white gaze. We also know that the black community is being point at for many things that white people do not experience or have to worry about it.
