Nepotism is an unfair use of power in order to get jobs or other benefits for your family and friends.

Nowadays, employers more focused on hiring people who are a good fit in the work environment. That kind of people usually has similar values. If you know someone through a friend of a friend or a social media contact it may make them seem more valuable because they’re within similar social or professional circles. That’s why it may make harder for someone without a connection to start working in a new industry and can lead to a lack of diversity. But on the other hand, referred employees usually have lower turnover rates than non-referred employees according to studies. Do I think that it’s nepotism? It depends on the employer. If an employer truly believes that the referred person has the potential and great work ethic, who is right for the job then who not to hire that candidate. But if the employer hires referred applicant just because he was referred by the employer or friend, that is nepotism.

In businesses, where nepotism concept intensively used, the human resource department cannot work independently. Under such circumstances, competitiveness seems impossible. It is very difficult to promote employees if they compete with the one who has a family member, relative or friends in the higher-level position in the organization. What’s more, working under an incompetent person is stressing and less motivative environment for employees. Also, it leads to a lack of confidence that negatively affects job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and individual performance. So I think it is likely unethical to give vacant positions to family and friends at my own company.

In my opinion, there are no advantages in nepotism. Imagine you have a ball of good apples and you put bad ones in it be sure that all good apples will be spoiled. That’s how I see nepotism concept is being used in businesses.
