“Our attitude towards immigration reflects our faith in the American ideal. We have always believed it possible for men and women who start at the bottom to rise as far as talent and energy allow. Neither race nor place of birth should affect their chances”( Robert F. Kenedy). Migration and Immigration have vastly impacted the American Identity in every way in the past and will continue to do so in future generations.
The Plymouth colony affects American identity because America now has a melting pot of religions and people get to choose which they believe in or if they believe in any. Indentured Servants started a hard work ethic and kind of the idea that if you work hard you will make more or get more out of it.
Indentured servants were mainly European immigrants looking for labor and benefits in the future. In America when Chatel Slaves were still being used their culture was ignored and not considered part of American culture. Chatel Slaves came from many places mainly Africa but when they came they brought their cultures although their cultures weren’t excepted then they are slowly being excepted in modern America.

Mountain Men brought a hard work attitude and you have to work for what you want in life. Mountain Men were people who surveyed westward and trapped animals for there furs. They also brought the idea of moving for better opportunities. The Oregon Trail brought the idea that moving to new places for new opportunities and that exploring for new opportunities is good and can be beneficial in the long run, and all around taking steps to strive for better opportunities.
The Cherokee Indians weren’t considered American because no matter what they did like changing their culture like adopting Christianity, learning English, and forming a similar government that could not change their race so they were still pushed off their land because a small area of gold was found that the Cherokee had no interest in.
Ellis Island impacts the American identity because of all the different cultures that came through, their ethnicities and customs became apart of that American identity. Also, the hardship that occurred moving to America not having a job and little money. The Great Migration impacted the American identity because a lot of the cities those people moved to were primarily white and they brought their culture along with a kind of new ethnicity to those areas.
The Great Migration was typically people from the south that majority African American and they brought there culture and southern culture north. Nativism impacted the American identity by discluding the immigrants and not accepting them as part of the American identity because they were other than white and not considered American. Which has majorly affected America in the way of what it could have been like and how its modern cultures could’ve been different.
Migration and Immigration have majorly impacted the American Identity in every way in the past and will continue to do so in future generations because of Americas past events like The Plymoth Colony, Indentured Servents, Chatel Slavery, Mountain Men, The Oregon Trail, Cherokee Indians, Ellis Island, The Great Migration, and Nativism in the United States.
The future will continue to be affected by these events and events not included in my examples some more relevant in 2019. We care because these events made America the way it is today and it also interests many people because their ancestors had a effect on it and if they didn’t then those people have a chance to affect the future which is very unique in a way to be a part of something that large.
