Geography is such a course which enabled me to know about different aspects of the world like the place, space, culture, ethnicity, population, language and many more. There are many articles which elaborate on this course. One of the articles is Place or Space. From this article, I got to know about the place or space. In human geography, place and space are the two different important aspects. Places are the set of cultural characteristics whereas space is something abstract, without any substantial meaning.

Places can be defined as how people are aware of or attracted to a certain piece of space. A place can be space with meaning on it whereas space can be Place when they become time-thickened. Space is regarded as the basic stuff of human geography, time and history. While place seems to have parallel concepts when they merge and follow spatial history. According to this article, the study of Human Geography changed from social concerns from the 1940s to 1960s. It was a concern with the social history which made the space of Past and Present a place for spatial studies.

The main aim of this argument is not to purpose the chain of command between the human geography and history and also not to suggest that one culture or discipline gives rise to another, which is even more concerned with space. This approach emphasizes the relation between human geography with history as an intertwined narrative with fluctuations, rather than a straightforward story of borrowing and gradual approximation. The articles were not introduced in disciplinary order but are groups according to the approach.

The key question about this article is not about what place/space are but what they do. The next article is ‘The Failure of Multiculturalism’ has confused rather than assisted a debate about learning from living together in an interdependent and interconnected world. This narrative highlights the empirical and theoretical connections between multiculturalism and decolonization. Multiculturalism is defined as the majority of a population and indigenous peoples with different ethnic and discipline backgrounds at various stages of permanent settlement. The concept of multiculturalism in political theory is more wide-ranging than the law or policy.

The result of Multiculturalism is the notion that host nations or cultures should not expect that new immigrants internalize the defining ethos of the host nation whereas it is considered that each cultural group will maintain its distinct identity irrespective of whether its base values differ from the host nation. This supports the aspects of multiculturalism in policy and law, which also suggests the philosophical scope of multiculturalism even after. Multiculturalism has failed because of increase multicultural nature of modern societies. The ‘failure’ denotes the presence of people from different ethnicity posing a threat to social stability.

It also represents the failure of delivering the good, harmonious and stable place by both the objective and subjective reality. It means that failure of a demonstration by the significant levels of inequality, racism, community, emotional resistance to diversity and desire to end or reverse the trend. Another article called ‘Racial Inequality After Racism’ elaborates the existing obstacles to racial equality, especially to African Americans. This mainly elaborates the discrimination arising in the post-racial era in the U.S. This article explains the time period after Rights and Laws were enacted such as the Civil Right Act of 1964, Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 during the 60s.

This mainly elaborates how the U.S. economy changes and how was it affected by social problems, obstacles to equality in education among people. This also includes the barriers to contemporary subtleties of the institutionalism of racism and discrimination. The continuous racial inequality in employment, housing and other social domains have increased the interest in the role of discrimination. This article reviews the information on discrimination with the main idea of racial discrimination in credit markets, consumer interactions, housing and employment. It then provides an overview of major findings from the research on individual, structural and organizational mechanisms which may underlie contemporary forms of discrimination.

This discussion finds the readers to debate in the study of discrimination and to provide information in building the important line of research. Each time the new academic year starts, I find myself asking a question: ‘How can I further gain more information that literally applies to my life?’ This year Human Geography has given me such a great opportunity to learn more about the world related to place or space, cultures and ethnicities of the world, information on how do I see the world from my opinion and many more.

Similarly, this course has also given me the opportunity to work with a team to make a music video. Working with the team is really cool and interesting. We can gain get so much of information on one topic with different opinions and eventually we agree on a decision, which definitely elaborates unity. I am on Team 8 but my team members rarely come in the class, so I decided to collaborate with Team 41. Later on, my team members also joined the group. During the project, I decided to choose the song for the project. The song was more related to my culture and ethnicity i.e. ‘Buddhism’. Since other members were new to this song, I planned to make a draft and made it. Before the due date, I presented to my team and they wanted to make it a final draft and we went for it.

Well, I really worked hard for finding the concepts and song for this project. Working in a team was cool but I think I had to work hard rather than my other team members. Anyway, I loved being supported by my team and working with them. In this project, we tried to elaborate the concept of religion (Buddhism). We related this religion with landscapes and its major costumes, ethnicity, principles and values. This religion is more related to non-violence, love, meditation, peace and living organisms.

So, we posted some pictures related to meditation by monks and nuns. This religion is mainly followed in the regions of The Himalayas, so we also included the pictures of Himalayas with Gumbas (Monasteries) and the landscapes of such environment. The music gave the real meaning to the Video. Well, this music is one of the religious music for mediation which helps to remove stress and depression and eventually lead to inner peace to a living organism. I must say this song was well- chosen for this topic.
