Reason for Referral

Arthur was referred for educational testing as part of his three year re-evaluation as required by state regulations and as determined by the team.

Background Information

Arthur is a 9.4 year old boy who attends the third grade at Cranston Public Schools in Cranston, Rhode Island. Arthur has been attending Cranston Public Schools since the first grade.

Arthur’s current Individualized Education Program (IEP) addresses, literacy, speech/language, and numeracy. In addition to the services that are outlined in his IEP, Arthur receives supports from the reading specialist, two times per week for 30 minutes. He also receives math tutoring, provided by the math specialist, three times per week for 30 minutes. Arthur has been receiving services since the first grade.

Observations

Arthur came to the testing area without much hesitation. He was cooperative and participated willingly. Arthur complied with all tasks and did not appear to show any signs of frustration as test items became progressively harder.

Arthur was observed in a 3rd grade classroom for math 30 minutes. During the classroom observation in his third grade class, Arthur appeared to be happy and comfortable. Arthur was very engaged and enthusiastic when he was working on a math fraction worksheet.

Arthur also enjoys to work in a small group and assist his fellow peers if they are struggling. Arthur demonstrates appropriate social interaction with peers.

Mathematics:

The math subtests of the WJ-III measures a student’s ability to perform paper and pencil math computations, math fluency, and the ability to analyze and solve math problems. Arthur’s Broad Mathematics standard score was 131. Applied Problems and calculation were areas of relative strengths. The standard score in applied problems was 135 and in calculation the standard score was 132. Math fluency was a relative weakness in Mathematics with a standard score of 127. The math fluency subtest gave a three-minute time limit and a series of math facts to complete in the student response book.

Written Language:

The written language subtests of the WJ-III measures written language achievement through the use of spelling, writing fluency, and writing sentences given a verbal and picture cue. Overall, Arthur scored a Broad Written Language score of 131. Arthur demonstrated a relative strength in writing samples with a standard score of 133 and in spelling with a standard score of 129. Writing fluency was a relative weakness in Written Language with a standard score of 117. The writing fluency subtest gave a set of three prompt words for each item and must construct as many sentences as possible within a seven-minute time limit.

Reading:

The reading subtests of the WJ-III measures a student’s word identification skills, a student’s ability to read simple sentences quickly and a student’s understanding of written text. Arthur received a Broad Reading standard score of 97. On the WJ-III Arthur demonstrated well developed skills in all areas tested. Arthur demonstrated a relative strength in letter word identification and passage comprehension. Reading fluency was a relative weakness in Broad Reading with a standard score of 85. The reading fluency subtest gave a three-minute time limit, asked to read a series of simple sentences and indicate if they are true, or false by circling yes or no.
