Looking around Southern Guilford High School you would see a peaceful environment but there are always hidden things you don’t see and hear about. Take bullying for example; bullying is everywhere even if it doesn’t seem like it. Bullying is unwanted aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance, the behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious life lasting problems. There are many types of bullying such as Physical Bullying, Social Bullying, and Verbal Bullying. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically and/or verbally, excluding someone from a group on purpose and teasing. Bullying is the number one cause of depression and drug use at Southern Gilford High School and if we can lessen the bullying count rate we can save much more lives.

Bullying can occur any and everywhere but mainly at school. Studies show that children are the main target of bullying of their personal appearance, hygiene, lack of social class, actions, the way they talk, their family, their sexual preference and kids with disabilities and that kids skip school everyday juts to avoid being bullies. Children will always be the target of bullying because it’s easier to get into their head and make them believe and do anything that person says. Children are also bullied because they are more closed in, but bold enough to be themselves even if that means not having friends. I’m in high school, yes there’s bullying in high school, but honestly not as much as in lower schools such as elementary and middle school.

I haven’t seen bullying at my new school so far but that doesn’t mean I don’t know its happening. I go to Southern Guilford High School and I’m a senior. I haven’t been here long and I haven’t seen or heard anyone getting bullied. I’m not clueless so I do know its happening because no place is a bullying free zone no matter how much they try to portray it. Let’s talk about school shootings just for a bit because they are one of the most outcomes of bullying someone mainly at school. Bullying a person just because their different is harsh and it can cause to the bullies and the bullied to lose their life over something that’s not worth it and something you can mostly control by just leaving the person alone to be in peace.

Bullying can affect physical and emotional health. It can have a short or long lasting effect on someone’s life. Bullying a person can lead to physical injury, social problems, mental problems, and self harm thoughts and action. Those who are bullied are at increased risk for mental health problems, headaches, and problems adjusting to school. Bullying can also cause damage to the persons self esteem. Children and adolescents who are bullied and who are bullies are at higher risk for substance use and abuse, academic problems, and violence to others later in life.

Physical bullying is more likely to occur among males more than females. The 3 main causes of physical bullying is looking for attention, jealousy or frustration, and feeling powerless in their own live. Family is also a cause of physical bullying such as dealing with the lack of attention toward the child at home or poor supervision, aggressive behavior, Physical and verbal abuse, and also family violence Bullies are often physically stronger than their victims and have friends who condone their behavior.

Students who bully others often have trouble with self control, following rules, caring for others, and are at higher risk with having problems later in life, such as violence, criminal behavior, or failures in relationships or careers. Most people will say you can always stop bullying but that’s not true. Honestly bullying will never end but you can lower the rates of it in many ways. The first way you can take action on bullying by speaking up and I know some people don’t speak up because either the bullies has threatened them or they feel like they will not be heard, but no matter what still speak up because you will never know the outcome of your situation if you don’t say anything. If you tell someone and they don’t do anything about it then don’t stop, you just keep telling someone because you are bound to run into somebody that cares enough to drop what they’re doing to help you out.

There are always people out in this world that cares you and many of them are strangers and honestly that’s the best help you can get because sometimes the very people you think you can turn to in a time of need will be the same people who will turn a blind eye on you.
If you can’t find help in the people you trust then you can find it in other places. There are many organizations that help bullied victim. They will listen to you no matter what you have gone through and they will walk you step by step and into recovery. These are some of the web sites that you can look at and contact if you’re a victim of bullying or domestic violence.

People are less likely to bother you and more likely to listen to you if you walk, sit, and act with awareness, calm, respect, and confidence. Projecting a positive, assertive attitude means holding your head high, keeping your back straight, walking briskly, looking around, and having a peaceful face and body. Staying aware also helps you to notice problems so that you can deal with them sooner rather than later.

The best self-defense tactic is called “target denial,” which means “don’t be there.” Leaving an unsafe situation is often the wisest and most effective solution for getting away from trouble. Be sure to taste your words before you sit them out. This them think before you speak because the same words you throw at somebody can be thrown back towards you even harder.
