There are many people in the world that suffer from any kind of disease or mental problem. In the movie “the fight club” the narrator, Edward Norton, suffers from multiple personality disorder. This is a mental disorder that affects almost one million Americans, making their life difficult and troublesome. (www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Villa/8755/) The movie is particularly characterized by the fact that the main character and narrator suffers from this popular disorder.

The relationship between Tyler Durden and the narrator is very unique and strong. This is due to the fact that they are both the same person. The narrator doesn’t know that they are the same person. He thinks that they are just friends. In this particular case the other personality is totally opposite of the original one. Everything the narrator ever wanted to be. This in turn causes the other personality to take over. The development of each of the personalities tells us very much about the person as a whole. We see his fears, strengths, desires, dreams, goals, everything about that person is totally revealed by the two personalities. One is the quiet, timid, and careful person. The other is everything opposite; Rude, blunt, careless, and we could go on forever.

As the narrator goes on with this double personality he each time lives more and more as Tyler Durden; He starts to drift away from his real self without noticing. As far as he is concerned he is the same person, and Tyler is just a close friend who has gotten out of control. The fact that Tyler has gotten out of control bothers him because Tyler isn’t the man he always wanted to be. He is someone different, someone he doesn’t know anymore.

It is not very common for people to undergo a change as drastic as that one. Usually people with multiple personality disorders just have to take medicine to control it. However in our case the other personality in the narrator’s life takes over and becomes the principal controller of his life.

This situation is not common at all; this happened because of the fact that the narrator idealized so much his other self. Little by little the narrator looses control of his own life, his decisions and his self-control. People that undergo this type of change have a very difficult time returning to their normal self, if they are fortunate enough to be able to do it.

The theme of this movie and what makes it so strange is that the producer and writer are trying to make a point. What they try to say is that we all live our lives wishing we were someone else, but that someone who we wish we were is not what we think. Each person is the way they are of a reason. If we could all see our ideal self behave we might like it at fist, however later on we would realize that it isn’t really what we thought it would be. By using the multiple personality disorder the writer of the movie gets his point across quite well, making the audience think and reflect about society and their own lives.
