What causes us to fail college courses? Failing college courses is something relatively common in modern America and I am going to talk about why. Motivation, study habits, preparedness, professors, and lack of relevance are all factors as to why so many of us fail college courses but I believe the biggest reason is because we are distracted. The technologically advanced world we live in now has brought about an uncountable number of distractions to people around the world, especially college students. There are many kinds of distractions that we experience in our education such as; social networking, family affairs, jobs, relationships, our social life, and etc. Many of us are even more interested in what is going on within our society rather than our own education which could lead to our career jobs.

College is a big change for most of us going from living with our parents to being almost completely independent and self-sustaining. Becoming someone responsible for your own well-being can be a daunting task that requires much attention and quite a lot of work and can draw their focus away from schooling. It can be very difficult to balance classwork and a job at the same time not to mention unexpected issues that arise such as vehicle maintenance or medical bills. To put it short growing up and becoming a student can have a big impact on our ability to do well in college.

Another common issue students face is boring lectures and professors. I personally have been a victim of this in a few classes where the professor will stand up and speak in a monotone voice for fifteen minutes and then play an hour long video hoping the students will learn everything required to pass their course. Not to say that he or she is particularly boring but that they simply lack the ability to maintain their students attention in class. This can even be a problem to students that are truly, trying their hardest to pass the course. Just going to show that it is not always the students fault.

Technology also plays a big role in our distractions. to start off, many of us have grown up with technologies that did not exist to students in previous years. Products like iPhones and iPads have become very popular among younger college students and add to the distractions we face. But using electronics is now an everyday thing and there is no going back through this new era. For example, a professor at York University found that 10-20 percent of students use their laptops and tablets to take notes rather than traditional ways like pencil and paper. This can be a problem for students that are easily distracted, they may hear a ding, or see a notification on their screen and lose focus on the lesson being taught.

Using a laptop or tablet can also cause distractions for other students around you especially if you’re not using it for study purposes. Imagine the person sitting directly in front of you is watching “Game of Thrones” it won’t be easy to pay your professor much attention. Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube make it easier than ever for students to watch whatever they want whenever they want. However videos are not the only things students are distracted by on their laptops. Social media websites are one of our biggest distractions and effect almost every young person’s learning experience in some way whether good or bad we are affected by it. Some of us only use social media for communication with others ,but most of us use it for posting photos of our lives and seeing what others are doing around us.

Music is also another distraction students encounter in the class room and cell phones do not help in lowering distractions. Several students enjoy listening to music by various artists and types of music ,but this too can be a distraction even though it may help some focus it is still very easy to get caught up in the lyrics. It can also be hard to hear someone talking to you or around you if you have noise blaring into your eardrums blocking you out from the lesson.

Cell phones, I believe, are the biggest distractions that Students have in classes today because they provide the same distractions as everything else I have already talked about and more. Cell phones can; play music for a long time, allow you to watch hours of movies, allow you to take notes, browse social media, and stay in touch with your family all while sitting in a lecture hall. And according to the Wireless Association 70 percent of college students use their cell phones during class time. Cell phones have become something everyone owns and always have with them even in the classroom.

As you can see, there are so many different distractions that can cause students like us to fail college courses. From family troubles to distracting technology these are just a few of the ways students like you and I fail courses. Even though there are many other reasons and causes as to why some of us fail courses, I feel technology has had the biggest impact on students in recent years and will continue to affect students throughout the future. But college is not everything, even if you fail a class don’t sweat it, there is plenty of time to take the class again. Who knows you may not even need that class for your final degree.
