My desire for nursing was triggered in my high school years, in which I was a member of a club called Student Leadership. This certain group worked with children with disabilities such as Autism, Downs Syndrome, and many others. Helping these children and putting a smile on their face was everything I could ask for in life. We did many activities throughout the school year such as physical education, working on reading and writing skills, and occasionally math problems.
I also had the opportunities to care for them in a different way by feeding them and helping them in other personal needs. This club really sparked my interest in helping and caring for others. Due to the fact that I enjoyed working with these children, I began volunteering weekly for Special Olympics, an organization for children and adults who have intellectual disabilities.
They incorporate many things into the organization by setting up games that the children or adults can compete in and have a good time as well. I savored every moment whether it was in the warehouse stocking the trucks with materials needed or out interacting with the children or adults in the environment. I absolutely loved working with these children and young adults, they taught me so much about life and what is important.
Throughout my childhood, I practically lived in a hospital. My mom is an oncology nurse at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina where I have been watching her do the things she loves most every day. During the week days, I went to the hospital with her because my dad also worked. Doing so helped me gain insight into what being a nurse is all about.
One has to be hard working, hopeful, and caring when being a nurse, which are all characteristics that I possess. I also feel that I am motivated and organized. I have played high level sports my entire life including being a collegiate athlete, so I am used to having to prioritize and organize things to get my work done. I feel that my desire to be a nurse, along with my motivation and people skills will make me highly successful in the nursing field.
I chose nursing because it is a profession where you never stop learning. Every day, new knowledge and technologies are being discovered to learn more. It is one of the most highly demanding careers and it brings new obstacles and challenges providing satisfaction once the job is completed. This profession is full of adventure, emotional and physical, and this characteristic is one of the things I love the most. My thirst for knowledge is one attribute of mine that will be needed in nursing. Not all occupations allow workers to apply their knowledge outside of their employment place. However, I want a knowledge that can be used whenever and wherever I am as long as it allows me to help others.
My main goal as a nurse is to specialize in the care of developmentally delayed children and young adults. I want to eventually work in a hospital or facility that specializes in this type of care. I feel as if all the experiences I encountered in high school and volunteering helped me see nursing as my calling. Having chances to make a positive impact on individuals’ lives every day is one of the great aspects of being a nurse.
