Mechanical engineers design power-producing machines that benefit society and help the community for the better. The inner workings of thermal generators and motors fascinate me and I would love to continue to educate myself more on it. Mechanical engineers design many different complex machines, have various different work environments, and are able to have a flexible work schedule while getting paid well.

Approximately 226000 people are employed in themechanical engineering field (Summary (2018, April 13)). Employments projected to grow 9 percent in the next decade, as fast as the average for all occupations. Job prospects may be best for those who stay abreast of the most recent advances in technology.Mechanical engineers may occasionally visit worksites where a problem or piece of equipment needs their personal attention. In most settings, they work with other engineers, and engineering technicians.

Mechanical engineers design, develop, build, and test mechanical and thermal sensors and devices, including tools, engines, and machines. There are many different types of mechanical engineers and they all perform different but similar tasks. Auto research engineers seek to improve the performance of cars, heating and cooling systems engineers work to create and maintain environmental systems, and robotic engineers plan, build, and maintain robots. Mechanical engineers typically work 40 hours a week (Jobs, B. E. (n.d.)), but some work 60 hours or more each week. The hours hugely vary.

The average mechanical engineer is around 40 and the field is predominately male at only %11 of workers being female. Physique in this line of work can vary, due to the fact that there are various types of mechanical engineers, although most work in offices. Mechanical engineers typically need a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology. Mechanical engineering programs usually include courses in mathematics, and by applying work into real life scenarios. Mechanical engineers who sell services publicly must be licensed in all states and the District of Columbia.

Personally I would first look at obtaining my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and see what the possible future outlook is before making any other moves. One must obtain a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and then acquire the certifications. State licensure generally requires a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program, passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, relevant work experience typically at least 4 years, and a passing score on the Professional Engineering (PE) exam. After securing the required licenses, one can expect to make between $62,000 and aspire to make as much as $133,900 (Salary.com. (n.d.)). One may find themselves with a physical toll on their bodys, depending on the type of engineering they choose to pursue.

The benefits of being a mechanical engineer are receiving medical, dental, and vision insurance as well as vacation, sick leave, holiday, and retirement benefits. They can also pick jobs from multiple fields in the industry, such as coding, programing, designing products, machines, plants, automobiles, innovating robots, and becoming an entrepreneur. Although the benefits are plentiful, there are many hazards however. Hazards entail, handling, transporting and using dangerous goods, and working with flammable machinery. There are many innovations that have taken place that people use daily, but don’t realize that they would not be possible without mechanical engineering, such as the wheel, windmill, pulley, airplane, and the first sailed ship.

After graduating from college, an aspiring professional engineer will start in an entry-level position, and be assigned simple projects to start by their mentor. Once exceeding the mentors expectations, an engineer will be promoted to a senior engineer, meaning that they are now considered a professional within the establishment. Next, the professional will then rise to the supervisor rank, essentially just becoming a mentor, just before becoming a manager of the company. In the manager position there is no additional education required, seeing that all the experience has been gained traversing through the ranks in order to get to manager (“Mechanical Engineering.” Prospects.ac.uk).

I still want to continue to pursue my career in mechanical engineering because I believe I have a passion for designing and innovating new products. I also have a passion in the mechanical inner workings of motors and the engines of performance vehicles. I believe I can persevere through the tests and difficulties that come with attempting to become a mechanical engineer.
