Some people love building snowmen so much that a woman from Maine made a 122-foot tall anthropomorphic snow sculpture (Wikipedia.com). Snowmen have been a childhood tradition for many, many years. The tradition of building snowmen was first documented in 1380, and they were built for political debates in the 1500s and 1600s (Wikipedia.com).
The snowman is, and was exceedingly popular that in 1950 the snowman film “Frosty The Snowman” appeared at number seven on the worldwide charts for its brilliant creativity. Not only that, but in 2011 the asteroid, Four Vesta, displayed an image from craters of what looks to be a snowman. Later on, people made snowmen for political purposes, such as carving out the names of the candidates they were voting for (Wikipedia.com).
The first snowmen ever made was in the medieval ages. The first ever snowman to be documented was in the novel from 1380 called “Book of Hours” which now stays in the National Library of The Netherlands (yourholidaylights.com). During that time some people build snowmen to find the silver lining in a dreadful winter rife with starvation, and other life threatening causes (rd.com). During the late 1800s and early 1900s, people starting learning how to make cameras and photographs. In 1853, woman photographer, Mary Dillwin, snapped a photo of a snowman being built, that being the first ever snowman photograph (Wikipedia.com).

Now the tradition has sprouted up so much, people compete for Guinness World Records. Like the people of Maine have produced the world’s tallest snowman, The Snow-Woman, coming in at a height of 122’ and 7”. Also, that same snowman obtains another world record for world’s heaviest snowman weighing in at 13,000,000 lbs. The previous record holder/holders was also in Bethel, Maine, with a height of 113 feet. The smallest, however, was a whole 3 microns small. The students at the University of Western Ontario made this possible with three 0.9 micron spheres of silica, and a face made with ionic beams (Wikipedia.com).
Today’s snowmen are frequently thought of as a fun children’s and family activity during winter time. Typical snowmen are built with three snowballs, with each decreasing in size as they go up. Some take their traditions to an extreme with building a 22-foot snowman every year called the “Snowzilla” by Anchorage, Alaska, residents. All the more in 2014, the film “Frozen” portrayed a snowman named Olaf who is urging to get to summer, but doesn’t know he will melt. After that people stormed to producing him in the winter white snow (Wikipedia.com).
Not only are snowmen a form of childhood play and a fun family activity, they are considered art by some people. Even, the then 19-year-old, Michelangelo sculpted a magnificent snowman in the ruler of Italy’s mansion courtyard in 1494. A few years later, in 1511, the “Winter of Death” occurred producing more than two feet of snow. People took advantage of this and politicized with it and made snowmen just to show anger towards churches and religions they didn’t support (rd.com). Fast forward to 1986, the film “Jack Frost” released and peaked at the highest on the charts with its creative imagination. In that film, it portrays Jack, the key character, getting into a car crash and waking up in the snow as a snowman. Since then, everybody has started using snowmen in traditional Christmas movies. There are so many facts, traditions, records, art, and history behind snowmen. To this day people still build snowmen every year in the amazing winter time. Snowmen were originally found in 1380, but the traditions didn’t stop there. Snowmen aren’t solely childhood traditions they are fun family traditions for all.
