There are many people out there who struggle in learning how to be a better parent and a better leader. There is plenty of research out in the world discussing parenting techniques and leadership techniques, but what I was curious in learning about was how we can use leadership techniques to help improve our parenting techniques because they are so similar and if we do further research on the topic, it will be another platform to learn from on how we can improve ourselves and our parenting techniques.

Good parenting is very similar to good leadership in the sense that you need to carve a path in order for those under you to succeed. Taking the person under your wing to guide them will give them the necessary confidence to overcome the task at hand. In this study, I am examining the similarities between parenting techniques and leadership techniques to determine how we can best move forward to better parenting techniques by using effective leadership techniques. I thought this would be the perfect time to dive into this type of research since there is so much controversy starting to come about with parenting techniques and how a child should be properly disciplined and so on. I aim to bridge the two together to form stronger techniques.

Literature Review

The definition of leadership is very energetic and always changing. There are many different layers and levels to peel back to see what determines a great leader. Being a great parent is very similar to being a great leader in life in the sense that you have to carve out a path in order for the people following you to be successful in their walk of life. Leaders must utilize foreknowledge and overload themselves in being mindful of ground-breaking powers that will probably affect their capacity to lead.

Besides this, they should pick up knowledge on the most proficient method to configuration fitting techniques to progress relationships in an evolving working environment. The third stage is making a move quickly to have any kind of effect in an association’s ability to keep up its central goal and guarantee manageability (Johansen, 2012).

Being a good leader means watching their follower’s conduct as they are raising them and they have to analyze the follower’s every move to make sure they are doing a sufficient job in order to take that next step in life or in an organization.The definition of parenting is the bringing up of a child and to shoulder the duties and exercises that are associated with it. Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990) distinguished child support techniques as the methods by which kids create poise. For a kid to secure discretion, guardians should initially be joined to their kid, at that point watch, recognize, and revise the child’s ill-advised conduct.

Disappointment in any of these zones would diminish the probability of the youngster sufficiently creating discretion. For children this is commonly referred to as setting boundaries or providing structure. The parent explains their expectations and the associated consequences of particular actions” (Burlew, 2017, p 4). By providing the necessary framework in order to succeed for children and followers, it gives them the proper structure to go succeed in life no matter if it is in an organization or in a family.

For those of us working with kids, it gives off an impression of being a desire to take care of business for the kids and give them great exposure that will convert into important and normal practice. We additionally need to make and create learning associations where staff are upheld to wind up intelligent professionals and activity analysts to encourage, shape, and develop excellent administrations (O’Sullivan, 2009, p. 4).

Something that works reliably well with the young people whose conduct is so disobedient or untrustworthy is the active consequence. This kind of outcome confines the child’s opportunity. This dynamic outcome is an opportunity to build trust and character within a child by disciplining the child based off decisions the child makes whether that be in a positive or negative manner. People assume control using sound judgment for your child until the point that she can do as such (Hammond, 2013, p. 29).

This not only serves as a great way to guide children, but also people entering the workforce at a young age. Although the discipline may not need to be the same for an adult in an organization, the concept of the active consequence works well with leaders who are trying to nurture young employees of an organization. Parental authority infiltrates on the accomplishment of the instruction framework to enhance a student’s scholarly career. Unavoidably, understanding the connection between understudy scholarly execution and parental initiative can’t be over accentuated.

Information of particular components of parental authority, for example, checking and support, and how they cooperate to impact student’s execution, will assist instructors with engaging parents in the learning procedure. There is so much that we can learn about parenting techniques through leadership strategies. It would make it so much easier for people to understand that if there was extensive research on the topic.

Despite the social and monetary status of a family unit, guardians need to know and welcome the impact they have on their kids’ achievement in their academic careers (Bellon et al, 2016). This study shows how a parent’s influence on a child’s academic career can be impacted in the same way an employee’s can be impacted in an organization by the way the leader chooses to approach the employee’s working career.

This is where I believe there is not enough research on the way parenting techniques compare to leadership techniques. The two are very similar, yet I feel as if they are never talked about in the same way. If we were able to gather substantial research on this topic, It would cause the world to make more sense because we could use both techniques in a given scenario whether it be at work in an organization or in a family to solve problems that are facing us.

Methods

I gathered and analyzed information I received from four professionals in both the business leader industry and child psychology field all of whom are parents as well. In order to get the information I aspired to attain, I had to find a variety of individuals from different backgrounds in order to get the most accurate information possible for my research. I had the opportunity to interview two men and two women, all in different fields.

Two of my respondents are CEO’s of their respective companies, one is currently a child psychology professor, and the other respondent is the lead project manager for a construction company. This study was unique because each one of the participants is also a full time parent along with each of their job so it was nice to be able to relate two when speaking with these individuals. These people were chosen for the study because they have the necessary experience to be able to reflect accurately on the topic for this study.

Previous research suggests that business leaders should pick up knowledge on the most proficient methods to configuration fitting techniques to progress relationships in an always evolving working environment. Research also shows that parenting has to do with being responsible for a child and all of the duties that come along with it. Using this previous research, I customized some interview questions to get the most accurate information from the respondents regarding leading and parenting.

For the CEO’s and construction project manager, I customized the questions so that the respondents could relate leading in their business industry to parenting at home with their loved ones. For the child psychology professor, I created the questions to relate to her professional studies since specializes in child psychology. One interview was done by phone while the other three were done in person and lasted fifteen minutes each. Each of the interviews were debriefed shortly after taking place.

After debriefing the interviews, I performed a content analysis on what was said by each of the respondents. By using the grounded theory, I went over how the respondents each responded to the questions and kept track of the key words that each professional used when talking about leading in their field or parenting.

Findings

The results of this study came out to be very interesting. Each key word that the respondents said were each seen to be characteristics of both leadership and parenting techniques. While I was reviewing all of my interviews at the same time, I kept noticing a pattern which was showing the same words were coming up no matter if it was a question about leading in their industry or parenting at home or the psychology of a child. The key words said by each respondent intertwined with the definitions of leadership and parenting.

The words that were said the most were “empower, encourage, motivate, inspire, collaborate, feedback, goals, development and observing”. After seeing all these words I decided to do more research by looking up the characteristics of parenting and leadership and these words are all characteristics of both. This research could be very helpful in determining parenting strategies by using techniques someone would use while leading a business or a team. Some techniques that I have concluded to be good for leadership that could also be good for parenting are having a vision and strategy, leading by example, and having empathy.

Conclusion

The results of the debriefed interviews showed the key words that professionals in the industry used to describe leading in their fields, child psychology and parenting. The words used by these respondents were in very close relation to words that define the characteristics of parenting techniques and leadership techniques. I believe this clearly answers my research question pertaining to if we can use leadership techniques to be effective parenting techniques. By using all of the key words the respondents used, I was able to use them to come up with the three techniques of vision and strategy, leading by example, and having empathy.

Given this is a small sample size, these were words the respondents used when asked questions about leadership, parenting and child psychology. Parenting and leadership techniques are very similar and the point of this research was to bridge the two together to form a resource where people can learn parenting techniques through leadership techniques especially during a time where people are confused on how to discipline their children. Bridging the ideologies of the two together can help people become better parents through leadership techniques they might not have known they had.
