A community is often times at its best when all of the members within it are accepting of one another, and are working together as one for the betterment of the community. Unfortunately this scenario rarely plays out in real life, as there are always groups of people within a community that are not as equally accepted within the community. One of these groups is the gay and lesbian community. Although progress has been made in the fight for rights for the LGBT community, there is still a long way to go in the fight for equal right between gays and their heterosexual counterparts.

The fight for equal rights has long been a topic of conversation in American history, with each generation bringing a new group to the forefront of the equal rights conversation. In the 50’s it was womens rights that were dominating the conversation, followed shortly by the African American human rights fight, and now here we are today where the LGBT community is fighting for their rights in society.

Although each of these fights varied in terms of the rights that each group was seeking, on the surface they were all very similar. What the LGBT community is fighting for is for their relationships to be recognized in the same legal manner that heterosexual marriages are, and in turn to receive the same benefits that come with traditional marriages. Some of the benefits that come with a legally recognized marriage include tax credits, health insurance benefits, and ability to make decisions related to their spouse in the case of medical emergencies or otherwise.

As gay rights becomes more pronounced in the United States and more Americans than ever before recognize the contributions that the GLBT community makes to society and to neighborhoods and communities, the more we will see an explosion of policies and programs that respond to their particular needs. It will be a continuing challenge and opportunity for community leaders to integrate the GLBT community into the fabric of American governing life and community development.

Although the LGBT community has come a long way in recent years as far as progress, with more and more states legalizing gay marriage by the day, and support for the community growing daily as well, there is still a lot of progress to be made in order for gay and lesbians to be seen as equals in our society and I am confident that we as a society will one day come around and give this unique community the rights they seek and deserve.
