The citizens of the United States are culturally, and contextually distinct people, which means most people are pan of at least one minority, whether the minority is rooted in gender, race or sexual orientation. With so much diversity, the idea of what people want for the US clash as seen in the ongoing women‘s rights movement, more recently, the Me Too movement. After many years of hiding, a multiple number of women come out to raise awareness of sexual harassment. and they do this because they feel that it is their social responsibility. which is the feeling of obligation towards influencing a social matter for the greater good of the society (Pachamama Alliance 2019). The interpretation of social responsibility in the US is slightly misinterpreted. It is noticeable that opinions in the US are very polarized, you could see this in the political parties that people choose to identify with. It is polarized because of people‘s lack of empathy and unwillingness to understand other views, which eventually leads to self- centeredness (Chandra 2015) Because of this, self-interest now has an influence in a citizen’s social responsibility. This applies to the Me Too movement because. most people who go out of their way to vocally support it, and put an abundance amount of time into it, have relations to it, such as being female, The reason why this movement seems so exclusive. and self-centered is because no one outside of the female gender could virtually experience what the movement is about. and because people without any relation to this movement may think that it is abusing minority struggles,
Social responsibility in women’s rights has a self-centered twist on it in America because it is thought that someone who isn‘t female could never vinually experience what the movement is raising awareness for. Anna North explains that “discussions of the MeToo movement are typically focused on women, often eliding the experiences of men and nonbinary people,”(North 2018). That maybe because this is more of a woman’s movement. a movement that is bringing awareness to women who are being taken advantage of in areas, especially work places. Despite other people that don’t identify as women admitting that they have been sexually harassed before, it is thought that the experience cannot be the same or truly be what this movement is standing up for because these people aren’t women. It was also said that republican women sometimes found themselves isolated when they spoke out about harassment or assault within their own party(North 2018}
Due to the wide gap in what democrats vsl republicans think of the Me Too movement(Manin 2018), republican women might feel as if they can not talk to anyone within the party because republicans all together think the Me Too movement has gone too far. It is almost impossible for republican women to talk about harassment and receive sympathy from their politically associated acquaintances, explaining why the movement may be focused on an isolated group of people i.e. mostly democratic females, North also talks about how Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, defended Kavanaugh by saying that his confrontations were not as bad as those against Weinstein(North 2018). Situations such as this give the reason for the Me Too movement to be so exclusive because outsiders can think that it is okay to rank experiences when all of these experiences can affect different people differently and all types of sexual harassment can leave lasting damage on a person.

The Me Too movement can be a bit exclusive to women because people who aren’t females may see it as too much, People outside of this minority could not possibly understand the urgency of the movement. North mentions that Many had concerns about the MeToo movement 63 percent were concerned about men being wrongly accused, and 60 percent were scared about how women would lose opportunities because men would be hesitant to work with them(North 2013). Although women may have these thoughts, it is this type of thinking that makes them exclusive in their movement They do not want there to be a larger chance of supporters feeling this way because that can lead to the overall disbandment of the movement. terminating the possible progress that could have been made on the cause. Cindy Bradshaw on the N.P.R. podcast, makes a statement saying “I feel like some of the girls want the attention,”(Martin 2018)4Outsiders, or people who do not fully support the movement may agree with her, and maybe discrediting the movement.
And if this started happening from the inside of the moment, there would no longer be any hope for the movement, labeling it as fake. Lastly, Tovia Smith on the NTRR. podcast analyzes data that states 43 percent of people surveyed think the MeToo movement has gone too fan She infers that people think that “There’s too much rushing to judgment and too many maybe frivolous accusations,”(Martin 2018).Statements like these question the movement’s strategy, and just like what was said before, thoughts like this coming from the inside is worse.
Labeling the movement as unjust. It may be thought that this moment is not self-centered. or exclusive because it accepts intersectional feminism. Intersectionality is the concept that forms of discrimination overlap, and when they do, it heightens the level of minority someone is(IWDA 2018). Applied to feminism, it means acknowledging all types of females, which can mean bringing up experiences of racially different women in the me too movement. Recently a documentary “ Surviving R. Kelly” was aired. The documentary was about sexual crimes R Kelly has committed during his career. There have been many accusations of R Kelly sexually assaulting minorsi There was so much evidence showing that these accusations were true, but he was never put in jail. It is said that the reason is because these were matters of black girls(Respers 2019). While bringing attention to discrimination of black people, it also did for all victims of sexual violence. The concept of intersectional feminism uses the struggles of other minorities in their group to heighten the struggles of females. This strategy brings more awareness to women’s suffrage, which still makes the Me Too movement self-centered.
The reason why social responsibility is self-centered is applied to why the Me Too movement isolates itself, which is because of the thought of being misunderstood, If it were open to everyone, the message would become clouded, deeming the movement disorganized, therefore bringing a lot of hate to the cause. Although the Me Too movement is self-centered, it may not want to be, it could just be a matter of survival. The movement has been going strong for about two years now, and that might have not been possible if it had started broadening it’s spectrum of victims or views, It is like what was said in Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, which was about two sisters, Nina and Sarah, joining the campaign for the abolition of slavery. Adding subtopics to a campaign can distract from the main topic(Kidd 2014).
