Living in a fast-paced world where everyone seemed so busy that they don’t even have time to devote to themselves, doing something for another person seems impossible. We have so much in our minds. What would you cook for dinner, what would you wear for tomorrow’s presentation, how much will you allocate for today’s groceries, did your pet dog already eat, and the list goes on. In other words, we are trapped in our thoughts and become engrossed in ourselves that we tend to forget to see the people around us.

Kindness is about putting others ahead of ourselves. It takes a lot of effort and time to show kindness — and time is valuable for most of us. Kindness is done voluntarily and whole-heartedly — it is not something that can be charged or stolen from us. No one can dictate and control our decision to display kindness but ourselves.

However, some people took “displaying kindness” quite literally. Sometimes, kindness turns into a competition. Due to fame and success, most people, especially the influential ones, show kindness just for clout. It seems like the more “kind” you are, the favorable.

It makes me really sad to see what the world has become: selfish, greedy, and mostly everyone prioritizes nothing but themselves. I was taught that kindness is free and I didn’t think that it would come to this day that it would take so much effort to show kindness.

The world can sometimes be overwhelming and it feels like there’s nothing we can do to make a change, but there’s always something that we can do. Something as simple as a smile can make someone’s day. No act of kindness is too small. Everything adds up to something. Whether it be just greeting your neighbor every morning, offering your seat to that grandma in the bus or joining to charities that fund children’s education. Kindness is kindness.

Our own noble acts of kindness can change the course of someone else’s life. If we helped a kid to cross the street; if we offered a grandma our help to carry her luggage; if we stop and gave a beggar spare change or something to eat — if we do these things, we do not only have the capacity to simply make someone smile or make their day but also change their perspective in life. Just like how kindness is contagious.

When you see other people being kind to other people, it makes you inspired and be more like them. There’s nothing that can be compared seeing others display kindness to people they didn’t know. In this kind of encounters, I find myself inspired and wanting to do the same. Making other people’s day, and being the reason why they smile.

Instead of grieving over the enormous predicaments of the world, we must focus on what we can do, not on what we can’t. As a start, treat yourself with kindness. What we wish to see in others must first be seen in ourselves. Devote yourself some time. You can go shopping, travel around or go for a massage. Do anything that makes you happy. Kindness is an extension of our self-love and compassion.

It starts from within, then is shared with the world through noble acts of kindness. This doesn’t seem much, just small steps yet so significant. If all the 7 billion people in the world did something to help each other out, it adds up to something remarkable. Let’s make the world a little kinder, one person at a time.
