As an athlete who goes to college full time, and has a part-time job being a student who wants to earn a 3.5 GPA, always is on time for the job, and never being late to any practices was quite a hassle. Due to these daily life responsibilities I have dealt with a lot of stress throughout my life, especially as an athlete. Wenatchee valley college has blessed me with a scholarship to play soccer on its campus. This opportunity has not only brought me joy but also stress.

It may not be the stress you think it is because there are to two types of stress I experienced during this time of my life. Eustress and Distress. I experienced a lot of stress but gladly I can apply that I have had an experience that has projected me to learn from these days and become more prepared as an individual in the future. Claude Bernard (1865/1961) noted that the maintenance of life is critically dependent on keeping our internal personal social environment constant in the face of a changing environment. Cannon (1929) described this as “homeostasis.”

Selye (1956) utilized the term “stress” to portray the effects of anything that seriously threatens the equilibrium of an individual. The actual or perceived threat to a person is regarded as the “stressor”, while the response to the stressor is termed the “stress response.” Although stress responses evolved as adaptive processes, Selye observed that critical, prolonged stress responses might lead towards unhealthy living life. Practicing stress management skills could be very useful in the future to avoid the unhealthy side effects of stress. (Schneiderman, Neil et al)

Stress is a mixture of emotional, physiological, and behavioral responses that an individual will produce in response to specific situations that may intimidate us or test their limit. Stress is effective, producing people with extra drive or alertness they require. Stress could give a weight lifter the edge he or she needs to persevere in a workout. This healthy kind of stress is called eustress. Stress can be effective in many ways. In my case, stress helped me succeed. I was stressed about so many things entering my college freshman year. I was worried that I wasn’t prepared, not ready for a new life, new school, and especially being independent. The stress I had was Eustress which was healthy stress.

Let me explain why. It was healthy for me because it wasn’t to the point where I was depressed or sad. It was healthy in a way that it made me be prepared and have everything ready for every right moment in college. It helped to be more responsible and aware of the decisions I was making as an individual. The eustress had helped me become a better individual by giving me this little push to become more motivated. This is a way stress can be effective and handled before it got out of hand and unhealthy. The way it was healthy was the way I was enabled to channel this stress in many ways such as motivation and positive feedback. This is a very good way of stress management skills.

Unfortunately, stress is oftentimes not effective and can even be harmful when not handled adequately. Stress could make sales representatives buckle under the pressure while trying to make a sales at a significant business meeting. Furthermore, stress can enhance the risk of developing health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and anxiety disorders. This defective kind of stress is called distress, the sort of stress that people usually are suggesting when they use the word stress. The sources of stress, include three types of events, referred to as daily hassles, major life events, and catastrophes. Additionally, specific types of stressors occur within certain domains in life, such as family, work, and school.

An unhealthy way of stress can come in many forms and sizes. For example, As a college student-athlete being stressed is probably one of the most common things. The feeling of having to play in a sports event then remembering you have an essay due the next day is stressing which to me was a daily hassle. You don’t have much time and so you stress about how you will make time for things like this as student-athlete which is difficult. I was student-athlete who was nervous as a freshman and was worried and stressed about how I would balance college and sports out.

I ended being very stressed out because I continuously had to finish up homework assignment or project the day before because of having no time due to work, practice, and games! Not only did it affect me, but it made me feel that I was burning out. This was a moment I realized that stress was something you have to handle correctly or else it can be really ineffective in an unhealthy way. This was a real experience of me having stress. The way I dealt with this effect was by having a management plan such as enhancing my ability to accept diversity, time management, and prioritization.

Stress is a fundamental concept for understanding both life and growth. All people face threats to one’s equilibrium, which need to be met with adjustable responses. Our future as individuals and as a variety depends on our capacity to adjust to effective stressors. At an individual level, we exist with the insecurities of our everyday life including job stress, marital stress, and unsafe schools and neighborhoods. It is clear that all of us are exposed to stressful situations at the societal, community, and interpersonal level. How we face these challenges will tell us about the health of our civilization and as an individual.

Indeed, individuals who are confident and have good coping responses may benefit from such experiences and do great dealing with constant stressors (Garmezy 1991, Glanz & Johnson 1999). Indifference, if stressors are too tough and too persistent in people who are helpless because of age, genetic, or natural factors, stressors may head to possible disease. This is especially the problem if the person has few psychosocial resources and inadequate coping abilities. There is much we do not yet understand regarding the association between stress and health, but scientific findings being made in the areas of cognitive-emotional psychology and medicine will surely lead to enhanced health outcomes.
