My name is Cydney Goldstein and I am a high school student at the International Academy in Bloomfield Hills, MI, who also happens to be the child of an immigrant. I am writing you to request your support for the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 (H.R. 6). This act will not only provide protection from deportation for young adults previously protected by DACA but will also supply the opportunity to obtain permanent legal status in the United States if they meet certain requirements.

I urge you to vote in support for this bill as the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 is one that may help thousands of families around the country. As widely talked about in the news, President Trump has urged for the end of DACA, the program that allows for children of immigrants, or DREAMers, to stay in the United States and obtain work permits. If DACA ends, these young men and women would be ripped from their homes, deported to their birth countries (countries that they do not know) and forced to live in a foreign place.

However, if DACA is forcefully put to an end, the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 (H.R. 6) will help aid those hundreds of thousands of young men and women protected under the act. This will allow them to stay in their safely stay in their homes, obtain permanent residence in the United States for at least ten years, but also allow them to work and travel out of the country. Also, this bill would allow people deported out of the United States after September 25, 2016 to apply for Lawful Permanent Resident status and lawfully bring back more people that call the United States their home. Although this bill will be bringing more people back into the United States, there will also be more jobs being filled which will rightfully boost the economy.

Finally, this bill would create a grant program for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This program will help nonprofit organizations screen and assist individuals to help them apply for Lawful Permanent Resident status under the bill. With the creation of this, more jobs will be created and there will be better government funding for services involving immigration, which is not only useful to immigrants but to citizens who work for the government as well.

As I had mentioned earlier, I am a child of an immigrant who came to this country with barely anything. There were many times growing up that my father faced hardships. Although he was grateful he had the opportunity to immigrate and live in the United States, the process seemed overcomplicated and he noticed it to be unfair. Fortunately, my father became a legal citizen of the United States. However, times have changed since then and it seems to be getting harder and harder to become a United States citizen nowadays. Without DACA, many young adults are going to be vulnerable to the government, scared, and labeled as “aliens” in their homes. Although, the truth of the matter is, if deported to their home countries, they will feel like the true aliens. Thank you for taking the time to take my personal account into consideration, and I strongly urge you to vote in support for the American Dream and PromiseAct of 2019 (H.R. 6).
