Cloning was a very futuristic and impossible scientific dream that came to reality on a hopeful and sunny morning. Dolly, a Finn Dorset sheep, was born on July 5th, 1996, at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was the first living thing ever successfully cloned that actually survived. This is considered one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs ever, her birth and survival proved that adult cells can reprogram themselves into a new being. This successful event has given scientists a new spark of hope for future medical and scientific possibilities, but is this the best solution to all of our problems? Cloning is immoral because it deteriorates the meaning and value of life. A human life is precious because it is unique and there is nothing that could replace it, this could replace it.
“Each person is made in the image and likeness of God and thereby has an inherent dignity beyond the rest of creation” (American Enterprise 1998). Everything we know about religion goes against cloning and wasting a life for the benefit of others. Cloning is basically creating people for organ banks, you are technically killing people to save other people, that makes no logical sense.That is basically not allowing a person to have a brain or soul; we don’t allow them to think for themselves and choose their own destiny. “The rationale for a prohibition on cloning humans is understandable. It is not yet known whether the technique would be safe for the individuals resulting from it,” (Ballaro, B Sprague).
The meaning of life is to love, this has many interpretations, and there are many that would disagree. It seems possible that cloning could diminish the meaning of life. God, the creator, created life. If then, we create life, it seems like we would lessen the life that the creator designed. Alternately, it has been frequently mentioned that God intended us to be co-creators in his world. In this instance it seems like cloning may be the natural progression of our own godliness, but this is a slippery slope; no doubt.“Cloning will cause psychological distress because clones will think their uniqueness compromised or future constrained.We use children—treat them as means to an end—when we clone them to save another child,”(Driscoll).

In the other hand, cloning could advance our knowledge in order to help humanity. “Therapeutic cloning fulfills a critical medical and moral obligation to potentially alleviate human suffering,”(USA Today Magazine 121.2577 (1993). Even though there are a lot of risks and consequences for creating and using cloning we would get so much out of it that would make us evolve even more. We could create stem cells and regenerate old cells to cure all type of diseases that are decreasing our population.“Cloning can generate treatments or even cures for a wide range of diseases and conditions including diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and Parkinson’s disease,” (USA Today Magazine 121.2577 1993). Someone who has cancer won’t have to wait months or even years to get a transplant they could just get it on the spot, so many lives would be saved. There wouldn’t be so much death and grief in our world.
All of the wonderful things that scientist claim about cloning cannot be proven, they are just empty promises. Cloning might seem like the best solution to our problems but it is not, their are just too many maybes. Maybe we might create a cure for all diseases but maybe we might create a powerful disease that wipes out the human race, maybe it will enhance our lives but maybe life will now be created in test tubes and the course of nature will change for the worse forever.“The rationale for a prohibition on cloning humans is understandable. We would be stupid to go into something without knowing every possible outcome and consequence for our actions.
Is it really worth it to risk everything and everyone for the lives of a few? Would it be selfish to charge people millions of dollars for this suppose cure? We are human beings not lab rats, we can’t risk any lives even if they are “clones”.”Specifically it has been argued that cloning is morally repugnant and should be banned because it involves a form of biological manipulation that violates fundamental features of our humanity.” (Philosophical Issues In Human Genetics.)
Humanity is the most advanced and evolved specie in the planet. Let’s not do something that will degrade and devolve us from our current position, our world is suffering enough with all of our conflicts and wars that are slowly ruining our world. It would eventually lead us to less variation, and less opportunity to create new varieties in the future. Don’t base your opinions on what scientist promise, read in between the lines, think outside the box and go against genetic cloning. Genetic cloning is wrong!
