Sir Francis Bacon was a philosopher and scientist in the 17th century. He was from England. According to the book idols means delusion instead of a hero or icon. Francis Bacon believed that there are four different types causes of idols. He also believed that theses idols prevented mankind from making progress scientifically about nature and the rest of the world around them. According to the book the four idols are: Idols of the Tribe, Idols of the Cave, Idols of the Marketplace and Idols of the Theater.
Common mistakes that humans make, refers to the Idol of the Tribe. These things happen naturally, and mankind cannot control them. An example of one of these mistakes is the instinctive want for order. Francis goes to say, “The human understanding is of its own nature prone to suppose the existence of more order and regularity in the world than it finds.” Another belief of Bacons is that people force order onto things that have none. Mankind rash behavior and trend of shooting to conclusions is another natural mistake. He focused on this behavior in his writing saying, “this inability interferes more playfully in the discovery of causes.” Me as a person I believe the definition of the Idol of the Tribe, because when I lose something of mines, I always jump to conclusion that someone took it.
The Idol of Cave are those who arise within the mind of the individual. It’s also centered around a single individual rather than human beings as a whole. This depends on the level of knowledge and their biases. The Cave refers to the individual’s home and the area surrounding it. Depending on how you grew up shows a lot about how you act. People who lived different lives have different experiences, and this impacts their decisions and opportunities.

Idol of the Marketplace, which he thinks is the most problematic, is the third Idol. This tackles the difficulties of language. Mainly meaning how people give words their own meanings. Francis Bacon believes that the incorrect use and misunderstanding of words causes too much confusion and make communication so difficult. Words often betray their own purpose, confusing the real definition with the made-up definition. This happens a lot when I talk. Due to the fact that I’m from the south, we have a lot of slang words that only the south is likely to understand.
Idol of the Theater is the last idol. In the essay Francis tells us about three different types of philosophy, sophistical, empirical and superstitious. Idols of the Theater are individuals which are due to dishonesty and false learning. Platonists is an example of sophistical philosophers. Francis thinks they studied a few experiences without even studying them in more detail. An empirical philosophy is a philosopher that has put in a lot of effort and hard work into this theory. Bacon believes superstition philosophers put too much faith into scared writing, which do not think in an open manner, in distress of going against their philosophies. Learning about how the world works and how it was made can be very complicated to explain, due to the fact that it could be a lot of false information someone is telling you.
In conclusion, the four Idols are still noticed in our society today. It affects people in a politically and morally manner. Francis Bacon’s studies will live on to be true for many decades in time, and the four idols will also continue to affect us as well.
