In my paper I will be writing about Australia. I will discuss about Australia’s geological features, government style, economy, population, as well as their cultural life.

Lying between the Pacific and Indian oceans, Australia is the smallest continent and one of the largest countries on Earth. Apart from Antartica, Australia was the last continent, so therefore it is call ‘the Last of Lands,’ or ‘the Oldest Continent.’ How beautiful the continent has stayed is impressive, the rocks that formed the foundation were created during the Precambrian and Paleozoic times. One of the most unique characteristics about Australia is its global isolation.

This isolation explains why Australia has unique flora and animals. Some animals in Australia are koalas, kangaroos, dingoes, and kookaburras. Some of the most popular places to visit are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Cairns. One famous place in Australia is the Sydney Opera house where you can go and enjoy a meal with friends while watching a relaxing performance. Australia is a beautiful place to visit with dissimilar plants and animals and an impressive social landscape.

Australia is a federation, and under the constitution, their government is responsible for foreign policy, immigration, defense, customs and excise, and the post office. Six states joined together to form the Commonwealth of Australia, and each of them maintain the power to ‘make their own laws over matters not controlled by the Commonwealth under Section 51 of the Constitution,’ states a source. Australia has been described as a relatively independent country, as well as lucky. Furthermore, Australia does not share their continent, which is only a little bit smaller than the United States,

Economy is crucial to any country; Australia is pretty known to rely strongly to agriculture and foreign investment to keep a stable economy. The economy of Australia in 2017 has been going in a good direction, and Its growth has been increasing. Recently, there was a bill passed in the House of Representatives to reduce corporate tax rates, but it’s prospects look unpromising in the Senate.

However, there are some downfalls for the economy of Australia: mining investment is falling, average house pricings have started to die down, and their political leaders seem to not take any action to enhance economic reforms are just three out of a couple of reasons on why their economy could possibly go bad. On the other hand, there has been positive investments lately that have helped the economy. 92% of Australia companies have raised or maintained their dividends indicating a high degree of confidence in the earnings and growth outlook. Out of all of this, the economy is expected to rise or remain the same at the state it has been in for the next couple years.

As of today, the current population of Australia is 24,633,561 and their population is equivalent to .32% of the total world population. 90% of Australia’s population is urban, and Australia is ranked number 54th country by population size. By the end of 2018, the population is predicted to reach 24.91 million people. The average growth rate has been 1.56% since 2011.

Like the United States, Australia celebrates most of the same main holidays, but they also have their own Australian holidays and speak different slang than us down in the south. They celebrate Australia Day, which is on January 26, and this is when Australians celebrate the arrival of the European settlers. Also, Anzac Day is another holiday celebrated on April 25th, and this day honors the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), when they fought in World War I in 1915 and other wars where they’ve risked their lives in.

Australia has some of the same values as the United States such as freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Australian is also known for their ‘Aussie Slang,’; common slang words are mate, barbie, jiffy, and ta. Just like us Americans, first impressions are just as important to them as to us. Dressing appropriately to an important meeting, calling someone you just met by their proper name, and using ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ are things that they take very seriously as most people should.

In conclusion, Australia is a beautiful country with a stable economy as well as a great cultural life, geological features, population, and government style. My topics that I’ve discussed are the key points on what makes Australia their own unique country.
