Every group of folks, weather it is company, country, and team members, there will be the person who leads them to the success and I would like to define it as a mother who guides her children to the right path or holding their hands and lead them, so as well applied to the leadership as it is having different style. Due to the need of every country to have the leadership to lead them, so in this essay will cover-up the compression in leadership-style between Lech Walesa and Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Ali Abdallah Saleh

Ali Abdallah Saleh was born in 1946, ‘Amran City. He, at his early age, did not finish his educationand the reason why was to join the North Yemeni Armed Forces, 11 years old, and because of this he ended up with the minimal education and it was a bit of challenge to claim to presidential and hard to be elected as the president. Saleh was a solider-man where was claiming the positions till became a Colonel around 1975.

Saleh was not a typical person where his abilities were not still remaining, he was teaching himself of how to handle or can be called leading the surrounded people and that is only coming from experience and learn from others. This is an example that the leadership can be gained by experiencing the surrounding of the leader.

The style of leading was quite diplomatic and gathering trust,Saleh usedit after the civil-war in 1994 to merge the north with south as south was at this time following up Soviet Union which it was quite challenge to get two different system and people with different ideas and thoughts. It was impossible before this time anyone believes north and south become one because each of them have different leaders, system, believes, and many things could be named.

In 1990, Saleh had done a mistake that left big impact on Yemeni economyduring Gulf War where he decided to stand by to be an ally of SaddamHuessein, former leader of Iraq and that was due to his strategy, his needs first and the public was not following his actions like any other republic and democratic country. Because of that decision million Yemeni who were working in Gulf Countries lost their jobs and some got deported as well.

On the other hand, Leadership requires solid speech to the public speech style and how Saleh talked to the folks was builton mentioning of what he accomplished, aggrandizement,to the public and giving hopes, no one could follow-up the mistakes or said whatever pleased him without hesitation even at this time parliament existed.

Salah’s way of leading was not the type of listening to advisors to get the country out damaged economy or political, where there is quite saying “tryto keep your allies but keep your enemies closer” but it was only ride of them or keep them silent. For instance, after got the country united the former president of south at that time, Ali Salim Al-Beidh, supposed to stay the vice president as they agreed in 1994 but Saleh ride of him after he was promised after period of time.

The surrounding and the people who hold high positions such as parliament, his group in 1993“General People’s Congress” won the vast majority of seats in parliament, ministers or in army and that leaded to have full control of every part of the government and this only means no one can count actions.Eventually, the leadership of his was built on fear, putting himself on top of everyone, and “Do as I say”.

Lech Walesa

Lech Walesa was born in 1943, Popowo village. The life of Lech did not live normal life due to the situation where his biological dead died after his birth in 2 months and left at Poland where his mom and her new husband left to USA to work and support the family. Lech was lucky enough to manage to get graduate from primary and technical school as electrician to start his road to survive and to become the first selected president to Poland. The skills Lech gained from his experience that he became good speaker, good at negotiating, and listen to the others and get them closer to him to have their words.

Around 1980,his voice became hear after the outbreak Poland had at the time where the food price increased, so he took the lead of the poor and workers at this by this he earned to be the leader of labor union. When Lech applied to the election around 1990 the communist group was the lead at this time had big impact, money and control, but that was not enough to lead people and this is what Lech had earned 10 million Poles voice where he won the election 55% out of 100%.

In considering Lech’s leadership style were applied two different places; as president of a country or the head of Solidarity. First, needs to be understood both of those two positions require different skills and different treatment as president requires management skills, diplomatic and the right peopleand Walesa was good fit to be a head of Solidarity as social movement.

Risk taker, that was his style at making decision and moves which worked well as leader to Solidarity and on the other side failed him to change the context in Poland and this contributed to political side and most importantly the economic dislocation.Walesa’s skills were applicable to both but failed to apply on presidency. For example, couldn’t build coalition and apply negotiation skills and as well to political intuition to make opportunities as leadership, because of this damaged his reputation to the next election.

Also, Walesa’s vision had opposite to his supports and Solidarity inner circle, the free press in Poland invited scrutiny of all Walesa’s actions and decision from all sides and eventually got Walesa quickly feel from his heroic pedestal. Talking about speech that Walesa had, for example in American Congress in the late of 1989, was well-organized, sourcing from his leadership experience and the culture been raised straitening to the point without the need to talk what has been done from Walesa, unnecessary talk, aggrandizement of himself or Solidarity. The lessons can be taught from Walesa is that was event-making and indispose-able to the movement successful seizure.

Finally, to summarize both of those leaders’ leadership there will be the need to bullet them start with Saleh:

  • Built good reputation and supporters to get to presidency chair.
  • Event-making and indispose-able were not applied there.
  • There is no invited of free speech toward Saleh or of achievements/actions weather they are fake or damaged the country.
  • Speech skills were good enough for starting where promised the public to do all they dream of, but was reparative.
  • Was close enough as leadership to folks at the beginning but never was flexible and it was more radical.
  • Decision maker was quite good but some of them were not in the right places.
  • Got the skills from military and the experience of the surrounding and build on it the leadership.
  • Exhausted the country in economical, reputation, and lost trust among people.
  • Made enemies and was not listening and this style is Autocratic style.

Regarding Walesa’s leadership, his approach, and the outcome:

  • Got leadership skills from the leading to Solidarity group and the life of labors where was close to them.
  • Had strong and well-organized speech toward his goal.
  • Earn his place by listening and open-arms.
  • His actions were watched by the media and the public which is freedom.
  • Leadership strategy was quite open to all were initially to make the country better and got labors and folks hearable.
  • Event-making and indispose-able were big assets to history of Poland.
  • Kept advisors close to him to listen and this style is Democratic Style.
  • Maybe was not big change to the country but earned the election as the way should be as democratic way.
  • Represented the country in a positive manner even Walesa did not win the second election.
  • Won Noble prize as freedom of organization in 2001.

At the end, there is common between where they all had popularity gained at the beginning one of them did with his nation and the other one by the group. Saleh was culture leader and same as well to Walesa their speech toward the people not as political but as one of them. The matter of live each of them had has made big impact in their leadership where Saleh got from military and Walesa by his group and the public.

Walesa may not win the election at second election but he left a country with freedom and open hands and the meanwhile Saleh reminded as president with the same ideology of his leadership without changes suit the country. Walesa is generally good leadership has his own place at the community and the opposite to Saleh. Finally, leadership is quite important skills and should be adjustable to the needs and the place as well and gained by experiencing it.
