It’s everyone dream to have an amazing relationship with their mother, we all want to have that one parent that can understand us and give us good advice that will strengthen us as a person. Our friends and family may play alarge role in our life, but nothing feels better than having motherly love. Some people would rather have a relationship with their father than with their mother. Everyone has their reason for who shows the most love to them. For example, my mother has two kids me and my younger sister Mariam, she was always a hard-working person that I admired, I always used to say “When I grow up I want to be just like my mother, because she a brave woman and nobody defeating my mother”. When was younger she would buy me anything just to make me happy. We usually spent time together shopping and enjoying every moment, and it was the best thing in my life having that feeling that meant the world to me.

When I was eleven I wanted to go visit my grandparents in West Africa the Gambia, I didn’t want to live my life without having the opportunity to see them and listen to their stories It was different talking on the phone than actually seeing them in person, so my parents decided to take me to Africa to see my grandparents. I was excited to adapt to something new for 3 years Since I came back to the United States. The Gambia at the age of fourteen years old my mother and I wasn’t living together but we made time for each other when she’s not busy at work or hanging out with her friends I may not look like my mother but I felt like she understands me as a person like the same way I understand and respect the pieces of advice she gives me.

The little time we have together are times where Ijust cherish and listen to my mother advises, her advice made me the strong girl I am especially when it comes to socializing in school and outside of school. Her words were a motivation for me, I try my best to obey her as a teacher, she taught me ways to become an independent person and a respectful woman in society. However, my mother started working overnight as a nurse five days a week because we couldn’t spend any time together. I didn’t let it bother me much because it was understandable that she had to work instead of taking care of me and my sister, I started high school the same time, I knew my mother was busy so I decided to join programs and when I had free time we could still hang out and go shopping together, I joined Build ON to keep myself busy it was a great community service program where I could volunteer in different places after school.

The weekends were the only time I was free to spend with my mother. It wasn’t a lot but I kept it mind that in life people get busy and the little time we have for each should be enjoyed. On the weekends,my mother and I went to Herald Square to hang out It felt beautiful just picking a different outfit together. However, she was rushing to go home for some reason which was very unusal for her . I asked her I did anything that was disrespectful, she didn’t want to speak about it she just wanted to leave and head home. I was respectful about it because she is my mother and I didn’t want to cross her line so I obeyed her and went home in a sad mood, It was a new attitude I discovered about my mother especially rushing to leave when we shopping together. I tried not to let it get to me because things happen, and I thought she had a bad day .

Once I got home I apologized to her and told her we should hang out next weekend since it will be nice outside and we can just enjoy the moment together, She suddenly hangs up the phone on me without telling me what’s wrong, and I was heartbroken because I knew that wasn’t my mother behavior. I called her again and she told me she will be busy that weekend she doesn‘t have time to hang out and I should find something better to do. Unfortunely I feel like spending three years in Africa for quite long it made things collapse between me and my mother. People change over time, especially when you move away from them. Every since my mother told me she busy I decided not to bother her and ask her to hang out with me, I felt hurt and I decided to not speak about it because it wouldn‘t be important to her if she too busy doing better things in her life, Our day was pretty much packed with school, community services , While my mother goes to her overnight job and hang out with her friends Khadijah and Aminata our mutual interest of going shopping and hanging out during our free time begin to change.

At this moment my mother and I barely hung out, her new favorite activity to do was spend time with her friends and head to her job, and mine was still shopping but I missed going with her. Now, my mother is still friends with Kadijah and Amanita and work She loves them to death as she says, and according to her she misses hanging out with me, but she doesn’t have free days where she can hang out with me, in her free time, she hangs out with both her friends instead of me. On the other hand, I am a college student now busy trying to figure out how to get a’s in all of my classes. Since my mother doesn’t have time for me, she barely calls me and I feel like she doesn’t accept me anymore. I wish to that I had my mother back rather then the mother I have now, we don’t really speak and even if I try to call her she would not answer my phone calls since it’s not important to her. I had to learn how to live a life where my mother doesn’t give me any attention especially when I’m in pain.

In life, people will forget that they have priorities, they will ignore their love ones for people that not really them for them. I really enjoy shopping and listening to my mother advice during my childhood years, My mother and I built more than a mother and daughter relationship I looked at her like she was my own best friend, we do everything together as in shopping and talking about anything. Those memories will always be in my heart no matter how I feel now, that’s how life works 7 a person moves from one thing to another to find the path they want to follow. People are constantly changing throughout their lives, and the way the relationship my mother and I had immediately changed over the course this is an example of how someone important can change without you knowing any good reason‘
