Sergeant Major Morris is the one responsible for the tragedies that happened to the White family because he gave them the Monkey’s Paw to the White’s knowing the past of it. The word tragedy means to cause great suffering, destruction, and distress. The Monkey’s paw was cursed by “an old fakir”. He was a holy man and he did this to show others that “fate rules people’s lives”. The old fakir put a spell on the paw for a person could get three wishes from the monkey’s paw. Sergeant Major Morris is responsible for the tragedies that happened because he let Mr. White keep the monkey’s paw.

To begin with, Sergeant Major Morris is accountable for what happened to the White’s Family. Sergeant Major Morris is the one who gave the monkey’s paw away knowing about what it does when someone wishes from the monkey’s paw. In the text’s it states that Sergeant Major Morris said “an old fakir” put a spell on it because it shows people’s fate. This displays that Sergeant Major Morris knows the paw’s background by telling the Whites the story about how he got it.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Major Morris gave the monkey’s paw to the White’s family knowing that it brings misfortune to whomever wishes. Sergeant Major Morris knew and expressed how dangerous the monkey’s paw was and he decided to give the paw to Mr. White. He even said that it wouldn’t be his fault if something happened but it would and is his fault. On page 2 it says, “I had some idea of selling it but I don’t think I will. It has caused enough trouble already.” This shows that Sergeant Major Morris knew that it was not good to give to others, but he still gave it to the family. This also exposes that Sergeant Major Morris is somewhat the guiltiest one, he just had to give the monkey’s paw to Mr. White and was still willing to after knowing what the paw does.

Finally, Sergeant Major Morris should’ve never given the monkey’s paw to the white’s family, especially after how they didn’t take it seriously. Sergeant Major Morris had given the monkey’s paw that had a spell on it for anyone to wish to receive fate. He knew how the paw worked so well. Sergeant Major Morris stated “No. I threw it on the fire. If you keep it, don’t then say that it is my fault. Be sensible- throw it on the fire again!”. Now, this shows that Sergeant Major Morris knew how bad it was for anyone to have the monkey’s paw. This also states that Sergeant Major Morris knew everything about the paw, even the point of knowing how to the curse got put on the monkey’s paw.

Sergeant Major Morris is part of the problem because he gave the monkey’s paw to the white’s family, knowing about how it caused fate to come to anyone who didn’t wish properly. Sergeant Major Morris should’ve kept the monkey’s paw to protect everyone else. He failed the White family by allowing them to keep the monkey’s paw. Sergeant Major Morris is responsible for everything that happened to the White Family.
