Edgar Allan Poe is most known for his unique style of writing mystery and suspense, creating a pathway for modern mystery and horror genres. Throughout his life he has encountered many hardships that inspired him to create such dark and mysterious pieces. In his younger years his mother died and his father separated from his family. Later on in his life he had instances of failed marriages and getting his heart broken All of this built up emotion and sadness he used as a tool to help him create extraordinary pieces of writing, which made him one of the most memorable poems today Most people are familiar with his poem “The Raven” where he tells a story of a man who is disturbed by a raven reminding him about his loved one that has recently passed away.

In this poem, readers can see how Edgar Allan Poe differs from how other authors wrote suspenseful storiesduring his time. The poem had a notable melodic and dramatic blend which brought a new perspective on how to write suspense. He uses many instances of internal rhyme and the refrain of “nothing more” and “nevermore” to give the poem a good flow. He also emphasizes the “0” sound in words like “Lenore” and “nevermore”, which shows the lonely atmosphere of the poem. He used many techniques such as internal rhyme and refrains that made his poem unique and new.

This poem is only one example of how one of Poe’s pieces has changed the outlook of literature, Other stories and poems of his such as “The Tell Tale Heart”, “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, are more examples of mystery/horror literary pieces that have showcased Poe’s unique writing style. Edgar Allan Poe had a very unique style that he acquired by experiencing things that most people haven’t experienced. With these experiences he was able to write in a different view than most authors would in writing mysteries and horror stories. His various techniques opened the door for new and upcoming authors, giving us what we know today to be horror and mystery.
