The Battle of Normandy, during World War II (1939-1945) resulted in the Allied liberation of the western side of Europe from the control of Germany. Named “Operation Overlord”, the battle, also known as D-Day, began of June 6, 5 years after WWII began, there were bad mistakes in every way, and a twist ending that seemed impossible.

Not long after WWII started it became complicated. Germany invaded France in May 1940 and not long after the Americans entered the war in 1943 the cross channel invasion was beginning to ramp up. Soon Adolf Hitler put Erwin Rommel in charge that would impact the lives of many.

Adolf Hitler was born and raised for most of his life in Austria near the German border. As a child and late teanager Adolf wanted to become a artist, he had a natural talent in the arts and wanted to make it his career. To his disbelief his father disagreed with becoming an artist. Adolf always wanted to please his father, so he persevered and went to a university that let him become a strong german leader. Soon later many people started look up to him. He was not respectful but extremely powerful. German people rapidly grew to think he was a good leader. According to Wikipedia.com. “Adolf Hitler was a German politician and leader of the Nazi party…”

Erwin Rommel was a German general and military theorist that worked with Hitler. He was implicated in a plan assassinate Hitler but was not successful. Sadly Rommel had no idea he was involved in such thing and did not believe killing leaders for political ideas was the correct thing to do. Hitler found out most of the people who were involved in the plan and gave them a choice. According to wikipedia and other sources “Rommel was given a choice between committing suicide, in return for assurances that his reputation would remain intact and that his family would not be persecuted following his death, or facing a trial that would result in his disgrace and execution…” he choose suicide using a cyanide pill to protect his family.

When the cross Channel invasion started to ramp up in 1943, Germany did not know where the Allies would strike. So Hitler commanded to finish building the Atlantic Wall ( a 2,400- mile fortification of bunkers and water obstacles). He wanted to feel like he was protected and make the Allies think he knew what their plan was. Little did he know he knew none of the sort.

Soon the Allis carried a mass deception to make the Germans think that the main invasion was at Pas-De-Calais the shortest distance between Britain and France. Lots of tactics were used to carry out their deception including blow up equipment, actors as important people and lined up stick people made up to look like real people and actors represented as important people all this was broadcasted on the radio for Germany to pick it up.

Eisenhower selected June 5, for the day for the invasion. On that very morning it was extremely windy and water was coming down in buckets, horrible for the morning of June 5th Eisenhower’s meteorologist predicted improved conditions for the 6th. The morning of June 5th Eisenhower’s meteorologist predicted improved conditions for the 6th According to Extra History (youtube) Eisenhower told the troops to go for operation Overlord. At this point the troops were supper sick and tired.

On June 5, in the evening more than 5,00 ships and landing aircraft carrying troops and supplies left knowing there was supposed to be better weather in the morning. More than 11,000 aircraft were mobilized to provide air cover and support for the invasion. At this point being on the ships where 24 hours longer than planned because of the weather delay the tough conditions it hard for them and many got extremely seasick. Eisenhower’s meteorologist was right and the weather did get slightly better but it was still raining.

The morning of June 6, 1000s of paratroopers and glider troops were already behind enemy lines, inviting bridges exit roads, and slowly but shully invating. As many came down slowly many got slaughtered on the way down and had no way to fight it. Many people lost their lives by being shot down in mid air. According to some estimates, more than 5,000 Allied troops lost their lives in the D-Day invasion, with a lot more wounded or missing. A little later on June 6, the beaches where fully secured.

Over 326,000 troops, 100,000 equipment, and 50,000 vehicles successfully landed in Normandy. According to History.com “The British and Canadians overcame light opposition to capture beaches codenamed Gold, Juno and Sword, as did the Americans at Utah Beach.”

The Germans had been successfully removed from northwestern France. When they were successful removed according to Experts marked the end of the Battle of Normandy or D-day. Hitler committed suicide not long after from the regret of defeat. According to History.com “The following spring , on May 8 1945, the Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany”-History.com

Operation overlord or D-day was an invasion of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. It included endless planing, mistakes, and perseverance, but finally the Nazis lost, VICTORY AT LAST. To get more information about WW2 and D-day I recommend the book “ D-Day: June 6, 1944: the Climactic Battle of World War II” by Stephen E. Ambrose.
