Animal testing is widely viewed as the best and only way to test new drugs or cosmetics. People were led to believe that there are no alternatives out there and it is with the help of animal testing that most drugs became suitable for human use. I’m here to tell you that that’s not all true. In fact animal testing is immoral, old fashioned and untrustworthy. We need to change our views on animal experiments.
Devastatingly, big brand companies such as Mac, still believe that animal testing is the best way to test products but it is frankly very outdated. According to a report by the Guardian “New technologies can predict subtle risks that animal tests cannot”. There are many new ways to test drugs/cosmetics that are cheaper and faster than animals. Some of these include using human tissue and computer modelling to do the job that animals are doing right now. If you still don’t believe that animal testing is outdated then explain this.
Many global companies are completely cruelty free and never test on animals. They must just hope that the products work then, you might say. And to that I’ll say no, there are many many other options that have been around for a long time, companies just haven’t always used them. For example The Body Shop has “always and forever been firmly against animal testing”. This shows that big brand popular companies can easily be cruelty free. Companies should not still be using the same ways they did 50 years ago. You wouldn’t use the same makeup products from years ago, so why should companies still be testing new products in the same way? Times are changing, and so too should cosmetic testing.
The hard truth is that animal testing is unreliable. In fact as PETA reports conclude “animal experiments only have a 5-25% success rate at predicting harmful human side effects”. This startling figure shows how animal testing is pretty much useless. We can also never really be sure that the results obtained during the animal experiments will be accurate results for humans. Sometimes drugs can be completely fine when tested on animals but could have devastating impacts on us. Some of you still believe “The majority of major medical advances is attributable to experiments on animals.” This is simply a lie. The majority of testing on animals has nothing to do with human medicine. Animal experiments are mostly the first step or even just out of the scientists’ interest. People believe this statement because of the media exaggerating and even lying about medical advances to the public. As you can now see animal testing is unreliable, outdated and extremely cruel!
The experimentation of products/drugs on animals is extremely unethical. The shocking statistics are that around “100 million living, thinking, feeding animals are sentenced to life in a laboratory cage”. This is a horrible thing to think about. All of these innocent animals being allowed to be experimented on and ultimately murdered by scientists trying (and mostly failing) to make medical advances. A report by BBC Ethics says “The level of suffering and the number of animals involved are both so high that the benefits to humanity don’t provide moral justification.” This statement conveys that morally animal testing is always wrong because of the sheer number of animals that have died or been left harmed is so significant that even if a medical advancement could have been made, animals should not be tested on for that human benefit. It is wrong to treat animals as inanimate objects that are just there to be used to help human research.
The reality is that we eat more animals than are tested on. This to you might make animal experimentation morally acceptable. It is true that animals that we eat are now mostly free range so they don’t get kept in cages and get a decent quality of life before they’re eaten. However in animal experimentation, the animals can be tortured and just left in cages like nothing has happened. People have been against animals that we eat living in cages, so why aren’t more people against animal testing? After all of these hard cold facts if you still believe that animal testing is the best and only way to make medical advances. Then how would you feel if it was your pet (if you have one) that was being used for testing? I’m sure you wouldn’t be so for it if that was the case.
In conclusion it is dangerous, cruel and frankly appalling to sentence animals to be murdered for the sake of human research. As you are now aware animal testing is unreliable as the failure rate is extortionately higher than the success rate. It is also outdated because there is a variety of alternatives out there that are not being used to the fullest of their possibilities. Animal testing is unethical as millions of animals don’t ever see life outside the laboratory doors.
So the next time you look in Boots for your latest foundation, check whether the brand tests on animals. If it does, you now know the reasons not to buy it.
