Slavery in the past was a huge deal that changed America to the way it is now, thankfully we do not suffer from this problem these days. However, it took many steps to get to where we are. Many laws were introduced and many were followed and broken. Jim Crow was one of the laws that basically many a huge impact on the U.S. Along with this, slaves were not allowed to learn or get passed the educational level of white people at all. These laws has got slaves and black people in general killed as well for very unfair reasons which is why is important to address how far we have come from those times to now where everyone for the most part respects each other regardless of their skin color.

One of the slave was Frederick Douglass. Slaves back then were always colored people because the whites looked down on them. The whites were afraid of the blacks having the same knowledge as them because they need people to help work for them. Douglass was not able to learn the ABC’s, how to read and write. He was put from slave masters to slave masters. He even got rented to be a slave. Douglass got transferred to Baltimore and his slave master was Mr. Hugh. When he got to Baltimore, Huge’s wife, Mrs.

Auld was very kind to him and had taught him the A, B, C’s not knowing she was not allowed to because she had never owned a slave before. When Hugh learned that his wife was teaching Douglass the ABC’s, he told her to stop because if she taught him then he will be no different from them. It states in the book, “Life of Frederick Douglass” “Very soon after I went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Auld, she very kindly commenced to teach me the A, B, C. After I had learned this, she assisted me in learning to spell words of three or four letters. Just at this point of my progress, Mr. Auld found out what was going on, and at once forbade Mrs. Auld to instruct me further, telling her, among other things, that it was unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read.” (Page 28, Chapter 6).

Douglass not being allowed to be educated to the same level of white people could also be related to the segregation law of Jim Crow, which implied of division. The law originated from an actor named Thomas Rice who saw a black kid dancing on the streets which made him laugh and decided to take that idea into his stage. He would paint his skin dark and wear odd clothes and act like a fool which people found it funny back then. The law started in 1877 while the south was still recovering from the Civil War. This segregation law separated white people and black people into two different groups.

As a result of this law black people did not get or deserved any respect from any white person because they were treated as if they were inferior. The job system for black men dropped tremendously, and the most common job for black men and women were as maids and butlers. However, even if you had a job as a black man, the Jim Crow law would still apply to you. Jim Crow law became a real trouble for black men in America since everyone knew about the law and they couldn’t find any jobs for them to work.

The situation got worse when white people started overreacting about the Jim Crow law that a black man was found dead after whistling at a white woman. His name was Emmett Till and he lived in Chicago. Therefore, he really did not know about the law. He was only visiting some relatives in Mississippi so when he whistled at the white woman who was working at a store, he was found dead days later in a river.

It was not his fault for not knowing about the law, there were no warning or anything for him to figure out what to do and what not to do. When you look at it this way, he was unfairly executed but the law was the law and during this time if a black man demanded justice, the authorities will not even bother to do anything about it because of the segregation system that made black people back then not matter.

Therefore, slavery and race informs gender that depending on what skin color you are, you can be classified as either inferior or superior. If you are black, then you are categorized as a slave for both men and women. You are not allowed to learn how to read and write. If you are white, you are superior to blacks and you are able to do anything you please and reach a level of education black people could not get.

Being a white woman and men during this time of slavery meant that they were able to get slaves and live a better life than slaves. They have advantages over colored people. Being a black woman during Jim Crow means that it is harder for them to find any jobs and they have to be separated from the whites because of the jobs not being easy to find for them.

A lot of them had to be maids during the Jim Crow along with following orders such as standing up on the bus when a white person comes even if they are pregnant. They also have to be in the back of bus, not the front. For men, if they did not find any other job that they wanted, they have to take the job to be a butler. Colored people were not treated fairly back then. That is why Jim Crow’s law affected the way black people lived in America, even if they were not slaves, they still had to follow orders as if they were.
